Wife’s stepmother(her mom died young) has grand kids in Orlando. She lives near us on Lake Ontario. Pre pandemic she would go to visit a few times a year. She hasn’t gone since pandemic started. She had flights booked but canceled at last minute after her doctor told her it would be risky to go. She is fully vaccinated and boostered. She is late 70’s and has arthritic issues but is generally healthy. Doctor told her that being on methotrexate makes her more vulnerable to getting sicker if she gets COVID-19 even if vaccinated.

She is depressed about not seeing her grandkids. I wish I could convince her to go…. knowing her…. The benefit of her seeing her grandkids FAR exceeds her risk from COVID-19 now. She does also say she is afraid she would maybe ‘bring something’ down and infect the grandkids. These are kids who are attending in person school with hundreds of other kids.

She does speak with the kids frequently on FaceTime. But there is a hole in her soul that only seeing them in person can fix.

The California Golden Bears postponed Saturday’s game against USC over a coronavirus outbreak among Bears players despite that the team is reportedly 99 percent vaccinated.

Yeah, the pandemic has jumped the shark my ass. But this can't happen, Captain Poopypants assured us that vaccinations will totally protect us from getting covid. Went to the supermarket again for the first time in two weeks and everybody is wearing masks again. Everybody that works there and most of the customers. Two weeks ago almost nobody was wearing one.

Oregon is the only state in America that currently has a mandatory state-wide requirement in effect that masks be worn in public.

Tiresome, sure; a bit irksome, too; but probably of some benefit.

When you say ‘in public’, does that include outside?

It stops people who have it from spreading it but it doesn't stop people from getting it unless they're wearing a really expensive well-fitted respirator. All the other masks are useless. But it does stop most of the virus from leaving people who have it. But it really doesn't matter most people get covid-19 at home from a relative a room mate who got it at school, or in church, or in the workplace. Home is where you are trapped with someone and you can be exposed to it long enough.

Masks were required at the Ducks game at Autzen Stadium when I was there

K

"Some benefit?"

That is your standard?

At my office about 10% of people are wearing them, which is the same at the store or other public places. Which is strange because last year we were told the vast majority wanted to be forced to wear them.

Meanwhile it might be over if Biden was not mishandling it so much.

U.S. District Court Judge Lee Yeakel barred Attorney General Ken Paxton from enforcing the governor's ban on mask mandates, granting declaratory and injunctive relief to the parents and students who filed the suit on the grounds that the ban "violates Plaintiffs’ rights under the ADA and Section 504 and is preempted by the ADA, Section 504, and the ARP Act."

"The spread of Covid-19 poses an even greater risk for children with special health needs," Yeakel wrote. "Children with certain underlying conditions who contract Covid-19 are more likely to experience severe acute biological effects and to require admission to a hospital and the hospital's intensive-care unit."
