*Only known as pork roll* I don't understand the whole Taylor Ham thing, in NJ some people insisted on calling it that, its just wrong. |

| missedhervee Member since: Apr 23, 2021 Threads: 160 Posts: 5494 | I've seen it called both ways; I grew up in NJ, it was a regular on our table. We always called it "pork roll." After moving to south Jersey i learned of another local product never seen anywhere else; people called it "Take A toast" or "Boost." http://www.takaboost.com/ I sometimes order a bunch of authentic Philly soft pretzels from https://www.atasteofphilly.com/ Check it out, all ye who yearn for a taste of the once-familiar... |

I grew up in South Jersey, I have honestly never heard of Boost (looking at where its sold, the only place that I know that I have gone to is the Lucky 7 -which is kind of a Wawa knockoff type place- in Mount Holly, and I only remember that because its literally right next to the local armory). But, I am not a huge soda person, so craft sodas are not something that I would seek out. But, I have always heard Pork Roll. Taylor Ham just sounds so bizarre, whenever I have heard a "controversy" over which to use, I didn't think anyone actually used that. I have always heard a story (no clue if its true) that sometime during WWI era there was some new Food Regulation that required ham to meet certain characteristics to be labeled ham, and since Taylor Ham was not actually ham they had to rebrand (assuming this is true, nobody who is alive should still be used to calling it Taylor Ham). I love Philly food, but that links seems like a scam 130 dollars for a 12 pack of sliced pork roll? I am pretty sure you can buy multiple deli sized rolls for that price.... And, the soft pretzels over 100 dollars for 2 dozen? Even at overpriced boardwalk prices you can buy one from a vender for 1-2 dollars fresh. Seems like this site is taking advantage of nostalgia. (Heck order more than one item and its probably cheaper to just get a flight to Philly for the day....) -OK and 60 dollars for a gallon size of banana peppers, what, just checked the Walmart App and its like 3.27 for a decent brand.... - That site just seems more than a little price bloated. The other Souther NJ/ Philly area thing that people seem to like is Birch Beer (kind of similar to root beer), but also as not a soda person, I never liked it, but I know some people love to buy it when in the area. |
