Carrell very much IS a straight man in this farce. He sets up jokes for other people. Like the running gag of some unannounced person always waiting in his office that tells his secretary not to tell Carrell he's there. Carrell is the straight man in that joke, he has the reaction to the prank. He's Dean Martin to Jerry Lewis. He's Abbott to Costello. He isn't funny, that's not his job. I was wondering about this. I still have only watched the first episode but I got the impression they were not going to explain what she did to get in there. “A straight man will not go for kids.” - AZDuffman |

They don't. It's kind of bizarre. She just ends up there. |

The next day after seeing the first ep, this is one of the stupidest shows I've ever seen, especially given the stellar cast that signed on for this turkey. What were they thinking. I suspect because it mocks Trump a little, they thought they would make some kine of political statement. But like a reviewer pointed out, Netflix has to tread lightly, there are millions and millions of Trump voters that are subscribers. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

I wonder how expensive CGI really is these days? You ever see the YouTube channel where a dad puts his kid in special effects short episodes? "Facts are whatever I say they are." - Trump |

Pacomartin Member since: Oct 24, 2012 Threads: 1068 Posts: 12569 | We've discussed this topic before. Most comedies are expensive because of salaries. "Outside of salaries, a large budget seldom creates a successful comedy. By some standards "EVAN ALMIGHTY" starring Steve Carrel is that most expensive comedy ever made and also one of the biggest flops despite the effort to bring in the Sunday School crowd. Possibly the most financially successful comedies of recent years is “JUMANJI: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE” (2017). I would expect Netflix to try to create a clone in the near future. I do agree it gets better (and then worse) the middle episodes are probably the strongest. |
