Officials are warning swimmers in the Rio
Olympics to 'keep their mouths shut' while
in the water to avoid fetid diseased sludge
and the floating turds. How can an athlete
perform under these conditions, it makes
me sick just reading about it.

Too many events
Get rid of open water swimming
Enough medals are offered at the pool
While at it, get rid of rhythmic gymnastics and synchronized diving also

Can you do the triathlon at a pool? I should think the participants would be bored to death swimming back and forth with no tangible end in sight. Also, you couldn't fit them all at once. So you'd have heats, and then they won't all be running or biking at the same time. It could take days.

D'you know at the height of media coverage of the USSR boycott of the LA games in 1984, the head of Mexico's Olympic committee seriously suggested making Mex City the permanent host for the Summer Games?

Absurd as it sounds on first hearing (though Mex City did host the 68 games), it would make more sense to award two or even three games in a row to the same city. That would be about the best way to make money off the whole venture.

Sometimes weird variations are more interesting than you'd expect. For the spectators anyway.

Hey terapined, I don't want to hear about getting rid of rhythmic gymnastics. However, if they want to combine it with martial arts,... Balance a ball and twirl a ribbon while trying to kick your opponent in the head.

I love the open water events. They are true athletic contests. Nasty water is a "home field" advantage. Folks were so scared of smog in China because the media pumped up interest, but everything went off fine. The Atlantic is a big ocean. Rio will be fine.

I do agree that gymnastics and diving... and basically any "sport" where the outcome is determined by the opinion of "judges" instead of a clock, scale, scoreboard or measuring tape, should be dropped from the Olympics. Judges opinions do not constitute a "sport".

I grant you if you dump a few hundred people in a pool and have them swim, I think 30 laps or so, it would be quite a spectacle.

Of course, counting, not to mention timing, the laps for each competitor would be hard.

They should bring in new sports, like horseback archery. Had the Romans made that a competition, they would have always had the best cavalry in the world. They might still have their empire.

Well, let's not be hasty. We can start with boxing and work our way down.

Rio will be fine.

You bet. Cops are going soft on local
robberies and burglaries during the
games. The cops are getting kickbacks
for turning a blind eye to pickpockets,
muggers, and hotel room break-ins.
They expect crime at these Olympics
to be worse than any in history.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.

How about a super duper Olympic city on some Greek island and have the games there permanently? Take some of the politics out of it.

There's some show on Monday night. People compete to go to Las Vegas and run through the various climbing obstacles in the final event. I forget the name.
I enjoy it though. Definitely would be a sport.

"American Ninja Warrior"
Very popular show in Japan "Ninja Warrior" for many years
I remember years ago watching American Olympic Gold Medal gymnasts go to Japan to try the "Ninja Warrior" course
It wasn't pretty
These courses are difficult, even for Olympic gold medalist.
Athletes need to be the complete package.
US market picked up on it and made an American version
The winners in Vegas will go to Japan to face the Ultimate Ninja Warrior test
Mount Midoriyama obstacle course
