Well, I could say a lots of people like his songs.
Pretty sure he's picked up a lot of respect from other talented artists.

But instead I'll post this video from Moulin Rouge with a scene of a non-singer performing one of his songs in a love scene between the poet and the courtesan.

(you can dislike that too : ) Taste is really individual.

now I have to go watch this again. this was such a brilliant movie. when it was over, my husband and I just sat there in the theater and looked at each other. he said, "am I crazy, or was that one of the best movies ever, and I hate musicals." I said, "you're not crazy".
Never doubt a small group of concerned citizens can change the world; it's the only thing ever has

If a picture is worth 1,000 words, then a picture of a word is worth what?

Doesn't that strike you as simplistic? What if the word is "picture"? is it worth 2,000 words or one million? ;)

"Out of his way"?? :)

I like the guy, but not his music. Except for the original version of Candle in the Wind.

I love: The Bangles, The Go-Gos, Olivia Newton John, Pat Benatar, Joan Jett, Laura Brannigan, some of Madonna, some of Lady Gaga, and a few others.

Speaking of Elton and Lady Gaga
Just downloaded the audio files of a recent Elton John show at an unusual location
Tower Records parking lot Feb 27 2016 Hollywood CA
A wonderful performance by Elton John, the recording is excellent
Listening to the show right now
And in the middle, Elton welcomes Lady Gaga to do "Don't let the Sun Shine down on me"
Wonderful Elton and Lady Gaga performing together
I wonder if this is on youtube?

Do churches in the south-eastern states have the same affinity for the The Battle Hymn of the Republic as they do in the rest of the country?

I had no idea that the Battle Hymn of the Republic was popular with any churches. I recall the scene in The Outlaw Josey Wales wherein the ferry operator switched songs mid-stream, but have no idea if such songs are popular now.

Perhaps church services differ from church picnics or church fund raising events.

Recall perhaps the Visiting Organist who upon checking into a hotel where he had been told the list of hymns he was to practice would be waiting for him was drawn down to end of the counter and quietly informed that 'a man called and said these were the numbers you were supposed to play".

I never had much religious training or experience and only remember singing in Sunday School about that bear in the Bible. The cross-eyed one, named Gladly.

I'm not an expert, but I believe it is standard in hymnals. It is commonly sung at funerals of political figures, like Nancy Reagan. Maybe I should rephrase the question to be how is the song interpreted in the south-eastern states?

Hopefully Tarapined will stumble in shortly, if we can consider Florida as part of "the south."

Check with BBB
Her name says it all, probably got sand in her blood
Me, I'm a transplant. Still consider myself a Marylander. Go Terps, Men and Women in the upcoming tournament
As to the Battle Hymn. I can see a Church Choir performing it, its the type of song best performed by a choir
As to a performance, I would assume not appropriate in a church during a service but what do I know, I'm an atheist.
As to a southern view, most people I know are transplants also.
I live in Tampa, got to go north to get the feeling of being in the deep south
