TikTok Ban

Gandler Member since: Aug 15, 2019 Threads: 28 Posts: 4576 | I have never had a TikTok account, so this in no way effects me directly. But, I have watched TikToks on friend's phones and think the whole the format is absurd. Regardless, a new TikTok ban just went into effect and everyone is flipping out about it. Tik is advertising on the shutdown page that they are working with President Trump to overturn the ban, and Trump indicates he may give a 90 day pause to evaluate after taking office. I am biased because I despise social media, and TikTok is quite possible the worst form of social media, and has destroyed video content (now there are even "Youtube Shorts", I hate everything about this "art form".) All that being said, my personal taste is not a reason to ban something. I think TikTok is a genuine threat, not just to art, but to security (it is basically a data harvesting center for China.) I know this sounds crazy, but if Trump works to overturn the TikTok ban (even after GOP controlled Supreme Court affirmed it,) this will be one of the most disappointing aspects of his Presidency. Now if TikTok sells to an American company, I would be more open-minded about its return. But, I just find it crazy how many people are genuinely upset that such an app is gone (I have always thought everything about it was trash.) https://www.npr.org/2025/01/18/nx-s1-5266146/tiktok-offline-supreme-court-ban https://www.forbes.com/sites/antoniopequenoiv/2025/01/18/tiktok-ban-trump-suggests-hell-delay-ban-heres-everything-we-know/ https://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/news/2025/01/18/tiktok-ban-update-potential-buyers-merger/77810307007/ |

The Amendment protects it nonetheless. However, Congress, the President and now SCOTUS has judged TT a national security threat and must be closed. So that's that. Now users a flocking to other services, including some that originate in....CHINA. These services are as bad or even worse than TT in collecting data and not protecting it from bad state actors. If Congress and the Prez were truly concerned about data privacy and data security, they would've passed a law protecting data privacy and data security. As it is, the TT ban performative nonsense that doesn't protect US user's data, and just plays a game of data protection Whack-A-Mole. That being said, the President-elect has said he would issue an exec order restoring TT for 90 days, and TT has just said they will be coming back online to US users. As aside, I've never used TT, but do enjoy YT shorts. |

Somebody's obviously using it, a demographic that I'm not aware of. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

I’ve seen videos that migrated to YouTube. And I worked a gig dealing poker as the wives made some dance video for it. About all I know War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength |

Pretty much everyone under 25 uses TikTok. I still don't see what all the hubbub is about though. It's pretty much the same thing as YouTube Shorts and the old Vine app. I also don't know why all the libbies & wokies are whining about the "ban". Just use a friggin VPN man, and you're good to go. 🤷♂️ |

rxwine Member since: Oct 24, 2012 Threads: 200 Posts: 20763 | I think it was reported 7 million people earn a living using TikTok. Short videos are literally what regular ads are on TV in length. "Facts are whatever I say they are." - Trump |

That is a misleading statistic. 7 million small businesses use tick tock as one of the tools to drive customers to their business but almost nobody depends solely on tiktok. Almost everybody uses multiple internet services to do that. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

Something tells me you were crying like a little girl when Trump called to ban TikTok back in 2016. War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength |
