Hateful Eight is bombing big time. Been
open 2 weeks and hasn't made $50 mil
yet. Got 74% on Rotten. The police union
is taking credit for boycotting, they might
be right. A lot of people were turned off
by Tarantino and his shooting off his mouth
about cops.

He is not against cops, he's against bad cops.
There are bad cops out there
The Union is against him because in their view there are no bad cops.

Saw "Brooklyn". When you look up "Chick Flick" in the dictionary, you will find a picture of the poster from this movie next to the following definition

Chick Flick (noun) Chik' Flik'
(1) A film intended for an audience of women. Warning: If you are a guy watching one of these, you will want to set your hair on fire and run out of the theatre. Example, see the movie "Brooklyn".

The film is a women's version of Eddie Murphy's classic, "Coming to America"... except all the characters are Anglo, it isn't a comedy, and it is set in post-WWII Ireland/Brooklyn instead of late 1980's Africa/Queens. Okay, now that I think of it, the film is nothing like "Coming to America" (except for the coming to America part).

The story is about a shy girl who leaves her widowed mother and sister in their small Irish village to come to Brooklyn, New York. She comes of age while working in a department store and living in an all women's boarding home. She starts night school to study book keeping. She meets a guy. Events conspire to bring her back to the village and people in Ireland where she must make some decisions about her future.

If you enjoy slow developing period pieces with lots of dialogue with accents, and no action, this is a movie for you. Otherwise, makes sure someone has a fire extinguisher to put your hair out. Stop, Drop, and Roll!

I give this movie two suitcases out of ten. Saoirse Ronan plays the lead and does her best with a weak story and excruciatingly slow pacing. Unfortunately, she can't save this stinker.

LOL. Did you have to pretend to like it because some 'chick' wanted to watch it?

Hehe... no, but I couldn't just run away. Here is an example of my kind of movie:
The Raid: Redemption

However Mrs. Carumba would want to set her hair on fire if I made her sit through it. I suppose it all evens out in the end.

The ultimate scene about "chick flicks" from Sleepless in Seattle.

I cried over "The Dirty Dozen". Jim Brown throwing the grenades. Richard Jaeckel and Lee Marvin on top of a tank dressed like nazis. Trini Lopez ... breaks his neck when they're parachuting. Richard Jaeckel had on a shiny helmet. because he was an MP. Please. no more. God. I love that movie.

Looks like the stories the young comedic actress is telling about working with DeNiro are going to be the best thing about "Dirty Grandpa".

But then I only read one review so far.

After 15 bad reviews, DG finally got a good one from blackfilm.com

Dirty Grandpa is hilarious. It is spectacularly perverse, sophomoric, and sexist; with no redeeming social qualities whatsoever. But it’s funny, outrageously funny, basking in unrepentantly low brow humor. I was honestly shocked by how much I laughed during this film. This isn’t English period costume drama. It’s a crude sex comedy starring one of the greatest actors of all time in a decidedly juvenile role. Critics can trash its stupidity and content, but they’re lying if they didn’t have a few belly laughs.

Aubrey Plaza is also a scene stealer. Her lewd sex innuendos with De Niro are hysterical. It’s a safe guess that many of their scenes were improved, and then the sauciest bits cut together during editing. Her sarcastic delivery with the dialogue is just spot on.

Imagine the most crass teen sex comedy redux with a more perverted old man. It’s a barrel of laughs, just the bottom of the barrel.

Just saw Room. Great movie! I cannot fault it in any way. Look for Brie Larson to be a strong competitor for Best Actress.

I just saw Room and agree with the Wizard that it is a strong film. It is a Canadian/Irish production, that appears to have been produced with a very small budget. Brie Larson is outstanding in a lead role, and Joan Allen (from the Matt Damon "Bourne" films) is also great in a supporting role as her mother. The film surprised me, like the Tom Hanks film Castaway, in that the story is more about the characters than their predicament. It is almost two films in one. I thought Room was based on a true story, but apparently the book it is based on is, according to author Emma Donoghue, a work of fiction. Despite the author's assertions, there are elements in the story that have actually occurred, but perhaps not all together.

The child in the lead role (played by Jacob Tremblay) is supposed to be five years old but plays much older (Jacob was actually 8 or 9 during the production). It is difficult to tell if this is on purpose or not. I think he did a great job.

Note that there is another film titled "The Room" which is completely non-related, but appears to be benefiting from the confusion.

I give it 9 out of 10 skylights.

"The Room" is the all time classic bad movie. If you mean the Tommy Wiseau 'comedy':

The funny (almost scary) thing about this plotline is that it's extremely similar to my Mom's story, except she came here from Canada, not Ireland, same time frame. We might have to see it just because of the coincidence, see what happened to her vs. my Mom's experience.
