Like I said, I don't think so. It's bombing big time. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

I think movies like that become profitable on the foreign box office. So far it's not doing so well, but I think enough people have seen it around the world that it will pay back. Jeff Goldblum is possibly the luckiest character actor alive. From his first film he ends up in a classic film, and then three years later makes one of the best horror flicks of all time. Within a decade he gets in two massive blockbusters which give him sequels. Most of the time he is just a Woody Allen obsessive type without the funny. Domestic Box Office 9/30/83 The Big Chill Col. $56,399,659 8/15/86 The Fly Fox $40,456,565 6/11/93 Jurassic Park Uni. $402,453,882 7/3/96 Independence Day Fox $306,169,268 5/23/97 The Lost World: Jurassic Park Uni. $229,086,679 6/24/16 Independence Day: Resurgence Fox $53,394,274 |

Big Chill is what I remember him most in, other than the blockbusters, his other movies were yawners. TV has kept him employed for 30 years. He's in the new Thor movie, that might do well. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

It starts out with a fairly engaging battle scene [it might bother some that it has inaccuracies]. The movie degenerates more and more the longer it goes on. The emperor gets into the ring to fight the hero. Really? That is so stupid that, well, words fail me. I think I would have rather seen a UFO come down and blow up all of Rome or something. And, no, that our hero was deviously disabled a bit does not make it acceptable I'm Still Standing, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah [it's an old guy chant for me] |

I loved Gladiator. Great movie As to Emperors getting in the arena themselves Emperor Commodus 180 to 192 AD https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commodus Commodus the gladiator[edit] Commodus also had a passion for gladiatorial combat, which he took so far as to take to the arena himself, dressed as a gladiator. The Romans found Commodus' naked gladiatorial combats to be scandalous and disgraceful.[21] It was rumoured that he was actually the son, not of Marcus Aurelius, but of a gladiator whom his mother Faustina had taken as a lover at the coastal resort of Caieta.[22] In the arena, Commodus always won since his opponents always submitted to the emperor. Thus, these public fights would not end in death. Privately, it was his custom to slay his practice opponents.[23] For each appearance in the arena, he charged the city of Rome a million sesterces, straining the Roman economy. Commodus raised the ire of many military officials in Rome for his Hercules persona in the arena. Often, wounded soldiers and amputees would be placed in the arena for Commodus to slay with a sword. Citizens of Rome missing their feet through accident or illness were taken to the arena, where they were tethered together for Commodus to club to death while pretending they were giants.[24] These acts may have contributed to his assassination. Commodus was also known for fighting exotic animals in the arena, often to the horror of the Roman people. According to Gibbon, Commodus once killed 100 lions in a single day.[25] Later, he decapitated a running ostrich with a specially designed dart[26] and afterwards carried the bleeding head of the dead bird and his sword over to the section where the Senators sat and gesticulated as though they were next.[27] Dio notes that the targeted senators actually found this more ridiculous than frightening, and chewed on laurel leaves to conceal their laughter.[28] On another occasion, Commodus killed three elephants on the floor of the arena by himself.[29] Finally, Commodus killed a giraffe, which was considered to be a strange and helpless beast.[30] Sometimes we live no particular way but our own - Grateful Dead "Eyes of the World" |

Gladiator won Best Picture Oscar that year, as well as Best Actor for Russell Crowe and Best Director for Ridley Scott. |

[abandoning spoiler concern] OK, well, that takes the supremely ridiculous aspect away from it I guess. It doesn't make me feel too different, since I still think it is absurd that Maximus was shown to have the ability to really fight; impaired ability, but even such an ability would never be allowed. Burned again for not checking up on every aspect before posting! I refreshed myself on the history of the big picture but did not look up this bit about Commudus. Maximus did not exist btw, but was possibly based on someone who never directly tangled with Commodus. Marcus Aurelius picked Commudus as his successor, and attempting to restore the Republic to rule is not mentioned as on his agenda in the Wikipedia article. I seem to have a penchant for taking on Academy Awards winners, and stepping on someone's toes here, sorry. I still maintain the second half of the movie is awful. OK, some aspects are well done. PS: note that Commodus was regarded as a coward
