Box Office: Steven Spielberg Has Disastrous Opening With “The BFG”

I said awhile back this would be a dog,
I couldn't even watch all of the trailer.
It looked like an awful movie.

In EvenBob's world, bad box office = bad movie.

It's not for you, Bob. It's a kid's movie. No one cares what you think...you're an old man.

LOL! Apparently it's not for anybody, it's
a sinking ship at the box office. I thought
the trailer was frightening, some huge
giant guy wandering around harassing
kids.

I hate to always be a contrarian but I recently saw BFG and it was an EXCELLENT children's movie.

Which means nothing BO wise. The 2nd
Jurassic Park movie made money, as did
Goonies and Money Pit. I think Harry and
the Hendersons even did well. ET at the
top sucks so badly I have yet to see more
than the first hour. I walked out of the
theater in 82 and last year I made it 40 min
before I was disgusted. I hate puppet
movies.

Any thoughts on "The Giver"? I see it's on Netflix for the time being.

I chose movies where he was a Producer, but rejected movies where he was just an EXECUTIVE producer. For example he was an EXECUTIVE producer on the Transformers movies, but it clearly isn't the primary creative energy.

The following list is worldwide gross for just directorial films

  1. $1029.20 Jurassic Park - 6/11/1993
  2. $786.60 Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull 5/22/2008
  3. $717.00 E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial - 6/11/1982
  4. $618.60 The Lost World: Jurassic Park - 5/23/1997
  5. $591.70 War of the Worlds - 6/29/2005
  6. $481.80 Saving Private Ryan
  7. $474.20 Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
  8. $470.70 Jaws
  9. $374.00 The Adventures of Tintin
  10. $358.40 Minority Report
  11. $354.00 Raiders of the Lost Ark
  12. $352.10 Catch Me If You Can
  13. $333.10 Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
  14. $321.30 Schindler's List
  15. $300.90 Hook
  16. $288.10 Close Encounters of the Third Kind
  17. $275.30 Lincoln
  18. $235.90 A.I. Artificial Intelligence
  19. $219.40 The Terminal
  20. $177.60 War Horse
  21. $165.50 Bridge of Spies
  22. $130.40 Munich
  23. $92.50 1941
  24. $74.10 Always
  25. ------------- BFG

One interesting item is that Spielberg who will be age 70 this December, is widely credited with creating the modern movie business with it's emphasis on summer blockbusters. But he never really moved into the latest age of global blockbusters that Christopher Nolan inhabits.

Even BFG is a perfect example. He knew going in that the movie was only aimed at the very young and was never going to be a blockbuster. But he seems to be following personal goals.

Not that Christopher Nolan doesn't have intellectual goals as well. The themes of many of his movies are very thought provoking.
  1. $1,084.90 The Dark Knight Rises
  2. $1,003.00 The Dark Knight
  3. $825.50 Inception
  4. $675.10 Interstellar
  5. $372.70 Batman Begins
  6. $113.70 Insomnia
  7. $109.70 The Prestige
  8. $39.70 Memento
