Here is a gift suggestion for anybody over 80. A greeting from the president. You can fill out a request here. The Obamas also send them out for new babies, weddings, anniversaries (50th and over). There is an exception for veteran birthdays, which have to be only 70 or more. This document lists some other appropriate reasons.

My mother filled one out for herself and got one very promptly. Here is a scan of it:
