Slightly off topic, but still relevant: Nordstrom has announced that they will not put up the Christmas decorations until AFTER Thanksgiving. From Nordstrom's Facebook page: "We won't be decking our halls until Nov. 23. Why? Well, we just like the idea of celebrating one holiday at a time."

Amen.

Kmart will open its doors to Black Friday shoppers at 6 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day and remain open for 42 hours straight, the company announced Monday.

Yes, consumerism and money above family. Seriously.

Burger flippers need the money and too many people are pushing in those locked doors anyway.

On the bright side, it is K-Mart so not like anyone is going to show up!

Locally at least one Sears and one K-Mart will each close on December 7. Think about that--who on earth closes a retail store in early December? How bad must things be to close then? Does the company have 1,000 days left?

Is that because it is a day of Infamy? Or, are those permanent closings?

Kind of related, but hate how retailers try to figure out a reason why I should be buying a another gift for a celebration where gift giving is added on.

It's like, first there is donut day. Then sooner or later I'm expected to buy donuts, because it is donut day. (for instance)

Sears, Toys R Us, and Wal-Mart all have plans to open their stores at 8pm on Thanksgiving day. Target will open at 9pm.

My personal opinion is that this is unfortunate for employees, and it's bad for our culture. Are we a nation devoted to family? Or are we a nation devoted to consumerism and money above all else? Are we headed for a slippery slope where eventually the stores will be open all day on Thanksgiving? I know that for a lot of folks Thanksgiving is more about football than turkey (this is depicted cleverly in an old episode of Cheers), so perhaps the holiday isn't so sacred to everyone.

In principal, I oppose government regulation of this sort of stuff, although Blue Laws have been around for centuries. (From Wikipedia: in Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, Oklahoma, New Jersey, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, car dealerships continue to operate under blue-law prohibitions in which an automobile may not be purchased or traded on a Sunday.)

Instead, I hope that everybody boycotts these greedy merchants and it backfires. But Americans love a good bargain, so say goodbye to Thanksgiving.

America is all about capitalism. If there is a sale, people will show up.

Without money, how can one afford a family? Oh yeah, everyone else's taxes or bankruptcy court allowing people to live well above their means (even millionaires do it) and then wipe it out. Additionally, there is no disincentive to going on welfare and merely having more and more kids while, conversely, there is no incentive to those of us who make the decision to not overpopulate the planet and attempt to live fiscally responsible…

If you do not have the means to afford having kids yourself…then don't have them!
