Just read The Power Of the Dog by Don Winslow. The best crime novel I've read in a long time. The story revolves around the formation and evolution on the Mexican drug cartels in the 1970s through the 90s. I really enjoyed Winslow's noire writing style. In addition to Mexican traffickers it has Irish mafia, Italian mafia, CIA, DEA, Federales, Colombian cartels, Contras, Sandinistas, FARC and a sort of Bosch type emotionally damaged DEA cop dedicated to justice (and a bit of revenge) in spite of being surrounded by corruption and betrayal.

It's the first of three novels in the series. I understand that FX has picked up the rights for a TV series. I hope they follow through.

Prior works, Dawn Patrol and Gentlemen's Hour, are each California surfing terms.

I haven't read any of Winsow's other books, but I like his style.

Excerpt:
The sunlight is filthy. Filtered through a smudgy window and dirty, broken venetian blinds, it creeps into Callan's room like a noxious gas, sick and yellow. Sick and yellow also describes Callan - sick, yellow, sweaty, rank. He lies twisted in the unchanged-for-weeks sheets, his pores trying (unsuccessfully) to sweat out the alcohol, dried saliva caked at the edges of his half-open mouth, his brain trying feverishly to sort out the bits and pieces of nightmares from the emerging, waking reality.
The mind hungers for that on which it feeds.

He has quite a following and some Hollywood money men readily open their wallets if he signs on as a scriptwriter.
Hiaasen in Florida and Winslow in California are quite popular.
Winslow is thought to be major financial backer for wolf preserve in San Diego County.

There is so much out there.

Get a $10 Kindle unlimited subscription (with free trial) and figure out what you like - it is like a library, without having to to go to the library. Lots of stuff now on KU won't ever be published for a traditional library anyway.
