Wizard Administrator Member since: Oct 23, 2012 Threads: 239 Posts: 6095 | Get ready -- there is another leap second tacked onto the end of today (June 30, 2015). What will you do with the extra second? The reason for the occasional leap second is the moon's gravity causes waves which cause friction to the ocean floor which causes the earth's rotation to slow. However, these extra leap seconds have been known to cause computers to crash. Further information: 'Leap second' to pause clocks at midnight as entire planet gains a second. The question for the poll is do you think we should abolish the leap second? Knowledge is Good -- Emil Faber |

I've read "War and Peace" and don't remember anything about what to do with an extra second. You believe in an invisible god, and dismiss people who say they are trans? Really? |

I meant I will use the extra second to read "War and Peace." Unless you mean I'll have time left when I'm finished? Donald Trump is a one-term LOSER |

There will be a 61st second of the 60th minute of the last hour today. Where normally the clock goes from 23:59:59 to 00:00:00 today it will go to 23:60:00 and hold it there for a second. In the very unlikely event I'm awake I should try to post something during that second to see what time it registers. Free copy of my book to anybody who can get off a post during the leap second today. Knowledge is Good -- Emil Faber |

You should be awake as the leap second was at 5 PM in Vegas. Although it is 8 hours difference from Vegas to London, because it is summer London is on Daylight Savings Time. So Vegas is only 7 hours from Zulu or Coordinated Universal Time abbreviated as UTC. |

reno Member since: Oct 24, 2012 Threads: 58 Posts: 1384 | Couldn't the leap second be combined with the leap year so that we could deal with both anomalies simultaneously? Surely waiting til 2016 couldn't have hurt. Computers don't need nice round numbers, they're okay with a leap day of 23 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds +/- leap second, or whatever. Keep the housekeeping efficient, I say. |
