While Chuck Connors is quoted as saying that his character killed 2.5 people on average, several other sources count 120 deaths by his character out of 168 episodes.

I haven't seen 3.5 per episode anywhere else. I've watched a lot of Rifleman episodes, and that number just didn't ring true with me.

It was on American Pickers. They found a 60's
Rifleman gun in a barn and blurb came up
stating that 3.5 were killed on average per ep.
Even 2.5 is ridiculous, even 1 is silly. The badest
of the bad in the Old West killed very few
in their whole career. Killing was a big deal then,
just like it is now.

As long as you don't count killing savages for scalps or sport, or just wiping out the buffalo, or giving away infected blankets as killing.

The way you just said it, it sounds like they were talking about all deaths on the show, not just people Lucas McCain killed.

Anyway, it was a western tv show, they killed lots of people.

I recall someone did an analysis of the murder rate per capita in Cabot Cove, home of Murder, She Wrote. It was astronomically high.

The TV series Dexter is about a serial murderer in Miami
His 117 murders would account for 15% to 20% of the murders in Miami from 2006 to 2013

Note that most of the murders were not identified as actual murders. Bad folks simply went missing, and it was assumed they moved out of the area.
