Not all were slave owners of course and not all even supported slavery. That was also at a time where slavery was sadly accepted by many in society. Margaret Sanger, who is still celebrated by Planned Parenthood as their founder (they still have information about her on their website) was a racist bigot and wanted to eliminate poor and minority people at a time when she and others should have known better.

Cruel acts done in the name of God by sinful men and women would be more precise.

The actual acts of God are always merciful and just. Before slavers cause the destruction of their own first born and their society they are warned over and over that their cruel actions are causing so much pain and suffering to an innocent people and that this come back to hurt them. Likewise in every instance where God's justice is necessary there are many, many opportunities for people to change their ways so as to not be subjected to and cause so much harm to themselves and innocents in society.
