There's suppose to be good train trip that runs along the southern border of Canada. Not sure if it's AMTRAK though.

I would second this one.
Are Canadian railroads more scenic?

What about taking the Green Tortoise? I hear its still around and you can "go hippie" singing, playing guitar, swimming, camping as you travel from Coast to Coast staying at hot springs, farms and hostels.

What about WOOFING? Willing workers on organic farms?

What about Couch Surfing?

Its all a change from the regular routine of raking money in on your gambling activities.

Having done most of Canada by train, the stretch from Halifax to Moncton is okay and Edmonton to Vancouver (the Rockies). The prairies aren't that interesting but kinda nice to watch slip by while reading. The Montreal to Toronto corridor has its moments. The Canadian shield I can do without.

Some of it really is much about bumping around different cities and seeing the world go by slowly.

Any recommendations on a trip to Belize? I really would kind of like to get out of the country if even for a few days.

Sorry those internet gremlins did something with my earlier response.

Belize: That green tortoise has a language school there and there are oodles of great diving schools. I hear gang trouble is increasing in Belize though.

Smithsonian museums by day and poker by night at Maryland Live casino. I could easily spend five days at the eleven museums.

+1 The Smithsonian, and other museums in D.C. came to my mind as well based on your preferences. I have no first hand knowledge of the quality of the local casinos though.

If you can travel to Asia, that would be a great way to be around a lot of people, but still be alone, since most Eastern cultures tend to be very hands off. How about Macau or Singapore?

As for Central America, I have heard really good things about Costa Rica from several folks, but they were all couples.

Greece could be a real bargain, lots to see, and good weather.

Seen lots of it years ago, though maybe.

Asia too far for a week off. I really want to do a 3 week or so tour of Japan with a group where you see all parts of the country and all kinds of accommodations. And yes, I want to do a capsule hotel!

For some reason, Belize always fascinated me. Probably because it was called British Honduras on the map I stared at because I was bored in Spanish class in high school. I lately have considered it as a retirement site and would consider making a go of doing mortgage processing remotely if I liked it. The USA I do feel is going bad ways and an exit strategy not the worst idea.

A worthy reason for a trip. Just don't fall into the common migrant thinking that the new place will be roses and honey, just like back home but 'better'. It's never like back home, and the culture will be different.... it just might suit you better, of course, but it will never really be the same as where you came from.

Had to learn that one myself when I became an immigrant to Canada.
