It's true, the Southern Strategy changed things/parties quite a bit. Republicans saw an opening to court racist southern voters and they embraced it.

The "Southern Strategy" was not about racism. It was about showing how out of step the Democrat Party had become with mainstream America.

No, it could not have ever been won. The only chance to win was to cross the DMZ and occupy all of NV. That was never going to happen. Even if that happened it would have been years of a brutal occupation and lots of insurgents to put down. There was no stomach for any of that.

Nation Building is a losing business.
