What is your favorite movie of all time, and why?

Mine is either the original "Godzilla" or "The Longest Day."

Both were innovative and broke the genre mould, but fact is as a kid they both entranced me and captured my imagination.

Apocalypse Now

Just such a great story put into Vietnam War setting. No other movie has captured my attention like this movie. Perfect cast as well.

What do you think of the extended cut. Kind of fascinating to watch because a lot was cut cut out such as the French Plantation and the playboy bunnies trapped.

"Casino." Story just so well done. Even though there is no plot.

Yes, "Apocalypse Now Redux", very good, but I understand why some of the scenes were cut for theatres. The movie is quite long (even the original/theatrical version), and this version adds almost another hour. The plantation scene is great, but it does break the pace (and is also one of the longer scenes in the movie), but it also adds to the setting (and the history of prior colonization), so I can understand why some people don't like it (in the movie for pacing reasons), overall I enjoy it. (It also points to the French history in Vietnam which is often not touched by many movies, "We Were Soldiers Once and Young" has a brief prologue scene that centers around an FFL patrol, but I can't think of any other examples).

There is now a newer cut (2019) which I have not watched yet, "Apocalypse Now The Final Cut", which is apparently (in terms of length), somewhere between the original and Redux. It has great revies, but all version do, so I am not sure how much the new cuts change or improve the flow of the story (I think it shaves about 20 mins off of the redux version, which was about 3.5 hours) over prior versions. I'll probably get around to watching it at some point, but I am content with the established versions, so I am not sure how much it would change the experience (other than the audio and visual upgrades).

I think one of the last -actually I am pretty certain the last- (physical boxes/discs, not streaming or downloadable) movies that I purchased was the Blue Ray version of Apocalypse Now Redux in 2012ish I believe (which had both versions, and a bunch of special features, including the Hearts of Darkness Documentary about the making, which prior to the Blue Ray was only obtainable from very old VHS tapes). I saw Apocalypse Now in High School (the original version first, and then the Redux), and one thing that never changed despite my constantly changing tastes is this remaining my favorite movie. I wanted to watch is after reading Hearts of Darkness (Conrad) in a high school English class.

Now, that we live in a world of streaming and home viewing (where you can take breaks and resume another day) I think there is more of an appetite for longer movies than there used to be. But, in the 1970s, there were just much more limitations because everything was designed around theater viewing (there just really was not home media other than what could be found on TV channels).

My favorite movie was Waterworld with Kevin Costner. "I've sailed further than most men have dreamed"

It was part of my inspiration for getting a ocean boat and living on it.
