I suppose the plane helps, but I don't think it's the determinant factor.
Also, as I recall, H. W. Bush had the 747 first. How much did he travel?

Emperor Hirohito died 13 days before HW Bush's inauguration. Bush did a tour of Asia only a month after his innauguration for the funeral, to return to China, and to see South Korea. He went to Europe 5 times in the 20 months before the 747's were delivered.

So partly, I agree with you. Bush spent his whole life in positions where he had to travel, so he attacked travel even before the 747 made it more convenient.

But once you have the jet, it just makes it so much easier to go places. Prior to having the 747, a sitting president had been to Africa only twice. FDR went because it was the only way to get to Europe during WWII in January 1943. President Carter went to Africa one time. But after the 747 a trip to Africa for a sitting president became obligatory every few years.

I believe Obama's 747 gets in flight refueling.

I'd be surprised if it can't be refueled in flight, but just as surprised if it actually gets refueled in flight. It shouldn't be necessary on a routine trip. Consider the plane carries well under the max load for a typical 747, even including the fancy furnishings in first class (ie for the president and entourage) and the president's bed and shower. That should extend the range a fair bit. Also refueling stops can be disguised as state visits. It even makes sense to stop in Europe or the Mid-East en route to Africa.

Website on Air Force One says the range is 7800 statute miles.

When the President went to Africa for a planned trip in June 2013 he went to Dakar, Senegal (3970 miles from Washington), then to Johannesburg (4170 miles), then to Dar Es Salaam (1510 miles), then back to Washington (7940 miles). Under the reasonable assumption that the UNCLASSIFIED ranges are a little short, he may have made the trip home without a refueling problem.

There is a release that says the jet refueled at Dakar on the way to JNB. There is nothing about the return trip, but unlike East-West flights there shouldn't be that much difference.

I agree that inflight refueling is basically for wartime conditions.

Either they are outright lying about the range of the jet, or they made a secret stop to refuel.

The Secret Service won't call it "lying", it is "intentional mis-direction".

I am certain the actual mileage is very different than that advertised on the sticker.

Reports are that on the morning of the 9/11 attacks, Air Force One went almost vertical, blasting the President to 30k feet over Florida to get clear of any potential threats. Even after that burn out, it was still able to tarry for nine hours over the Gulf of Mexico before touching down again.

I think the Navy reported the LA class subs could dive "under 300 ft." That tells you very little

I seriously doubt it. there are limits inherent in the design both of the plane and the engines. I think the F-15 could climb almost vertically, but that plane's engines are very powerful in relation to the airplane. They also have afterburners, Pull up the nose of a 747 enough and it will stall past the engine's ability to recover.

I was told by a friend they saw a guy had his van all spray painted complaining about Obama taking vacations, etc. People do seem to get upset about this but I don't really seeing them as vacations but just telecommuting.

Any exec level job has no real vacations so POTUS taking one never bothered me. I do think an issue is when the other side gets on them and when Obama complains about "the 1%" then vacations so much on other people's dime.

I remember a liberal taking issue that Bush took off most of August 2001 as if that caused the 9/11 attacks. That kind of thinking is just silly.
The President is a fink.

The best free divers in the world can dive that deep with a single breath of air, and without dropping weights or pulling themselves down a line (only using fins). And men have broken 300' without even using fins.
