An extensive marketing campaign and strong reviews — a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes is the highest for a Bond film since 1964 — are expected to bolster “Skyfall’s” take stateside.

It's already showing in Europe, so I imagine someone on this board has probably seen it.

Question: What next for Bond?

Although Bond movies use a lot of techno stuff, they usually don't go too far off into the totally implausible. I'm not sure if Bond has dealt with too many things that couldn't exist in some fashion (if not now, in the future) Right or wrong?

edit - of course the most implausible thing, is the existence of Bond himself, an almost infallible action charcter -- who would probably be dead 100 times over, or more.

There was a Mythbusters Bond special. There won't be a follow-up, I judge, unless they get permission to show clips from the movies /they showed story-boards to illustrate the myth...)

I wonder what real MI6 and CIA agents think of Bond.

They probably watch the Bond movies the way the rest of us watch a Leslie Nielsen movie, if they can stomach them at all.

I suspect a fair number of them applied for the job BECAUSE of the Bond mystique.

Based on the $200 million+ take in only 10 days in Europe, Skyfall is going to be a huge hit. According to the Hollywood Reporter, plans are already being made for the next two movies, which could be shot simultaneously as a two parter.

International box office for Skyfall is at $321 million on opening day in the United States.

International Box Office for Entire Run of earlier movies
$417.7 million Quantum of Solace
$426.8 million Casino royale

Of course, Skyfall is very unlikely to sell close to the nearly 75 million tickets sold for Thunderball in 1965 when it was enthralling an entire generation. Marvel's The Avengers, sold 76.77 million tickets. The original comic book: The Avengers #1 (Sept. 1963) was published shortly after the (8 May 1963) US release of Dr. No, the original Bond film.

Shooting two films at once was popular decades ago for low budget sequels. At the end of the series, The Planet of the Apes movies were finally shot two at a time. Of course, the decision to make the Lord of the Rings movies all at once ended up with a Best Picture Academy Award, and some disgruntled actors who were paid far less than most people would imagine given the success of the series.

Presumably Daniel Craig will retire from the series after these two films, as his salary demands would be impossible to meet if the films are successes. As was pointed out to me, the production company for Charlie Sheen's new TV series, after an initial 10 episode test run, will create 90 new episodes over two years and then shut down. Instead of negotiating killer salaries, Charlie Sheen (and his father) will receive money on the back end for the rest of their lives.

I kinda thought Bond DID die, but in missions that weren't worthy of being captured on film.

Then, the best agent in the service would be promoted to "007" and given the identity of "James Bond".

It should work. After all, who besides Q, M and Moneypenny even know what Bond looks like?

Then, when he next dies, promote another agent, and bring in a new actor.
Ignorance is bliss and knowledge is power. But having only some facts can get you into trouble!

Felix Leiter. But he's CIA, so he'd be fine with it.

Oh, this is not entirely related but I have to get it in: "It seems I chose the wrong intellignece service" Garak in DS9.

I saw Skyfall today, and I'm sure the reason it did so well overseas was due to the UK-centric plot.

Also, I don't think I'm giving anything away here, but I would like to open up discussion with those members who have seen it already. All reviews I'd read claimed this was the best Bond film ever, but I was disappointed. Javier Bardem as the villain was charismatic, sure, but he was about the least scary bad guy I've ever seen. Did he have a nuke? Nope. Laser powered satellite? nope. Want to rule the world or make billions on stolen oil or water rights? Nope and nope. He's just an ex-agent who's resentful at M and hacks into MI6 computers and threatens to expose agents names worldwide. That's it. And they built a whole movie around that? Lame. Also, I didn't get how Bond is just now meeting Moneypenny for the first time. Or why he's driving a 60's-era Aston Martin with the ejector seat and machine gun turrets just like Sean Connery did 45 years ago. Why didn't the producers give those gadgets to a 2012 Aston Martin? It's as if there were no other Bond films before this one. I didn't get it. There are other bizarre plot holes I won't reveal here, but I'm curious what others thought.

I have not seen this film yet, but in the Bond chronology, It all starts with Casino Royale. The Daniel Carig Bond films are technically all prequels. In effect it was a reboot, and I wouldnt put it past a film studio to start remaking all the old Bonds. The Aston may have been thrown in as a nod to the 50th anniversary of Bond, which falls this year.
