Slavery sucked. The folks who founded the United States were imperfect, as all of us are. One direct result of their work was the end of slavery. They may not have collectively recognized it at the beginning but "all men are created equal" really is true and has been the source of the fight to actually bring equality and will continue to be until it is as true in society as it is on paper.

This is stupid and divisive. Why aren't they working on things that will actually help bridge the issues that exist? You can ignore something you personally find offensive; you can't ignore being stopped for being Black. Perhaps some things do need to go, but there has to be a limit.

I do not get it. For so many blacks they never get over slavery. Instead of trying to improve their situation today they worry about 150-400 years ago. The guy I used to work with who FB defriended me I got tired of his complaining and told him to get over it. Clearly he was never talked to like that before.

It is just going to keep getting worse for the USA. Expat retirement may be in my future.

For all of us of European heritage we were all cose to slaves a 1000 years ago. In the feudal system that was the norm the average person was no better than a slave. You farmed your Lord's land who was often called Master. Your Lord decided how much of the crop you grew you got to keep and how much he got. If your Lord decided to go to war you became a member of his army no questions asked. If your Lord decided that he wanted your daughters maidenhead there was little you could do to prevent it.

This was the norm in Europe then, it is short step from there to finding people with no way to defend themselves without the technology you have and treating them as less than yourself as everyone wasn't equal in your world already.

Focusing more on potential symbols of something and just tearing stuff down is not going to fix a damned thing. Perhaps we should exam each statue, including those of every race and color, and take all of them out if there is one provable reason to do so. Why don't we do that with everyone, too, from the President right on down to the last person.

Only the perfect will remain.

There will be none.

We've been here before and we did not fix the problem. We need to fix the problem; let the statues be evaluated as we fix them. The "New Deal" helped take away the family unit...why not see what we can do to bring that back? It is great that everyone talks about fixing things...but really changing things takes a lot more energy which is often used up protesting when protesting is just the start.

Do the hard work.

Have you ever seen a statue of Genghis Khan in the US. I haven't. Do you know who he is?

If you don't know history, you won't even know who a statue of General Lee is.

You can put these things in a museum. You don't need them to remember history.

Provable reason: They cost money and can be sold for money. The Government suffers a deficit. Government buildings should display nothing aside from the flag of The United States of America, State flag and/or County/City flags: problem solved.
