The military is permitted to turn off ADS-B when conducting sensitive operations related to national defence, homeland security, intelligence and law enforcement.

However, it has been claimed that some military commanders mistrust the technology and apply an extremely broad interpretation of the rules, which sees almost all flights qualify for the GPS software to be switched off.
