This will sound odd, but I have been a one man crusader against having anyone sit at the base of a tree to hunt squirrels.

I have kept track of many instances, some before my time, in which a person has been mistaken for a squirrel and shot in the head, always the head. In each case, it makes no sense to have been mistaken for such a creature, except for one circumstance: the person has been sitting at the base of a tree and some other hunter coming along has spotted his head, probably wearing a camouflage hat, turning this way and that way on the trunk of that tree. That could easily look like a squirrel to anybody, and there are plenty of hunters who don't carefully confirm their target before firing.

It should say so in the hunter safety courses they teach.......... Do *not* sit at the base of a tree! when squirrel hunters are in the woods, or if this is just how you insist on doing it, wear a blaze orange hat.

I've never heard this advice given out by game and fish safety people. Admittedly, it's a rare event.

The problem for getting the word out is always the same, the details are not reported and the problem is free to continue for the next victim. I in fact cannot prove that these were the exact circumstances of this incident, but I would bet any amount of money it was.

That makes sense. Some animals can't see colors or patterns humans can see easily. So, that might be an option as long as you're limiting it such an animal.

Don't know if squirrels have such a limitation, or if it's ever been tested.
