It's actually a huge issue, prisons that hold serial killers get overwhelmed by mail and visit requests from random women across the country who saw them in the news and is obsessed now.

I have never heard of men doing this to women criminals. Or gay men doing it to men, or lesbians doing to to women. It may happen, but not nearly to the same scale. It's mostly an issue with straight women, they are obsessed with violent males.

there has been more than one incidence of female guards and even female psychologists on staff who have helped prisoners escape

Probably still there but early days of internet there was a site meetaninmate.com where you could pay to get a female prisoner pen pal. I do not think men get obsessed in the same way, more maybe they think she is decent looking and will need help when she gets out. Prison mail order bride.

I toured a county jail once and the guy mentioned the tier we were on which was empty was women the week before. Of course there was the comment about too bad we missed them, the screw said, "Don't be, you are probably allergic to HIV."
