Over the weekend I sold my car to Carmax and it was a surprisingly easy transaction with no B.S. I entered my car info on about five of the popular car buying websites and Carmax came back with an offer over $2000 more than the next closest one. I made an appointment online for 1pm on Sunday. I showed up at 1pm for them to do the inspection (which they didn't even do) and I left with all of the paperwork and a check in 40 minutes. I was surprised they didn't even try t sell me a car. Based on my one experience I would recommend them. I also think right now they are overpaying.

Selling a car to CArmax may be simple, but there is no way on God's good Earth I'd ever buy one from them.

Why is that? What are they doing differently from the other dealers? I have no idea. I have only bought one used car from a dealer and that was about 25 years ago. I had just bought a house and decided to paint it myself. I needed to buy an extension ladder so a buddy of mine that had a pickup was going to come over and take me to Home Depot to get a ladder. He didn't show up and this was before cell phones so I just drove to a dealer and bought a used pickup and then drove to Home Depot and bought a ladder. I was painting later that day.

You bought a vehicle just to haul a ladder? Why not just rent a truck?

Obviously i didn't think it through it was just an impulse. I was frustrated that my friend didn't show up and within 30 minutes I was at the dealership. It just seemed like the simple solution in the moment.

If you have that kind of $$$ to waste why not just hire someone to paint the house?

Typical advice for years is to hire a mechanic to inspect a used car.

I don't know if it was a waste. I kept that truck for a few years and then sold it. Also, I doubt I could have called someone that morning after my friend blew me off and still had the house painted by the next day. It was also probably the only time in my life where I took on a big home project and did it myself. I was much younger then and would not even consider it today. Heck, I haven't even mowed my own yard in 25 years or picked up dog poop in the yard. Today I really appreciate the conveniences I can afford to have others do tasks that I would prefer not to do.

Carmax put my 2016 Chevy Impala up for sale at $21k. If they can get that more power to them. I was happy with the $16k they gave me.
