I sold a car to Carmax about a year ago and couldn't be happier. Quick quote, generous offer, and the paperwork was very quick and easy. I feel sorry for whoever gets my old BMW, as it had a host of issues. I thought the Carmax inspectors would catch them, but as far as I know, they didn't.

Why I would sell a car to Carmax, but would never ever buy one from Carmax.

What was the price range? I took a car there for an offer, they lowballed a little too much so I said "maybe later." It was a Hyundai which I felt was worth $5-6K they offered $4. I was on my game because my mother ended up selling it for $5500, dead middle of my estimate. If they had offered $4500 or so maybe I would have suggested just get it over with, but $4K was just too low.

Anyhow, they just did a walkaround and look. Did not put it on a rack for a serious look. I forget if they drove it.

What kind of guarantee do they give on the car they sell you? Guaranteed to drive off the lot? I assume they give something.

I remember reading tips more than once about what to check for to see if a car has more use than it looks. Some of it is disputed. Like checking the brake pad for wear.

That is not as big a thing since they went to digital odometers. If you deal with cars much you can usually sense how hard its life has been.

The only one I know of is a 7 day return policy. As with most used cars that are out of warranty you won't get many guarantees.

My state (MA) has very strict laws that dealers must follow, and mandates certain warranties for used cars, based on mileage-no exceptions. Does Carmax have to follow state laws on warranties on used cars?
