Generally I believe the governments role in the economy is like the referees for sports team. You can compete hard, but someone has to make sure everyone is abiding by the same rules. As to whether it is fair for a mega corporation with overseas entities compared to a small business offering the same thing, the small company either must find a niche in that business that it can perform in a superior manner, or offer peripheral services like more personal attention to customers, because head-on, it will be buried.

But I also think government should have a role in preparing certain industries to cross over to other occupations. At the very least educationally. You want tobacco gone, you should push for alternative training or create incentives. Personally I think most dock workers could probably be replaced in large part already. We need to get people into the mode, that it is neither wise nor good for anyone to keep supporting outmoded jobs. If other countries start using untiring robots, you’re not going to win.
