What changed?

Two words: "Donald Trump."

How typical: create a problem then claim you can solve it.

That seems to be the playbook for (most?) politicians! It’s why I am happy when House/Senate/Presidency are 2-1. It limits the fixing of problems that don’t exist! Can you imagine a politician who ran on…. I won’t be proposing any new laws because everything is so good now!

I can think of one administration with a congress and USSC of the same political persuasion as the president, and a LOT was accomplished.

I am of course recalling FDR and his New Deal.

IIRC the USSC was 5-4 democrat (the republicans were known as "the four horsemen") and congress was predominantly democrat.

Conservatives hated it of course as they were out of power, just as the democrats whine today.

If you are happy with 2-1, why didn't you vote that way in 2024?

I didn’t know there was a way I could vote for a 2-1 outcome? I’m a New Yorker. My vote will result in a Democrat Senator. A Democrat Congressman. And a Democrat Presidential electors. Regardless of who I vote for. Locally, I’ve always voted for Republican candidates for NY State Senate. That used to be a nearly evenly divided chamber. If Tepublican resulted in that desired 2-1 outcome. But over the last few years has become fully Democrat, as has been the Assembly and Governorship.

And once again, the ‘2-1’ hope is just one of many factors I put into play. Even if I knew House and Senate were Democrat I could never vote for Trump. I’d have LOVED for a Republican Senate/House with a Harris presidency. She’d basically be turned into a veto machine! Same MAY happen in 2026 if Trump pisses off enough Americans to allow the Dems to flip the House and Senate. Can you imagine the fun listening to Trump railing on Shumer/Jefferies? And those two bludgeoning Trump!

So, again, why didn't you vote that way?

Reading comprehension issue? Deep in my post is ‘it’s one of many factors’. Also in my post is the fact that no matter who I vote for there is a zero chance it affects the possibility of a 2-1 result. ZERO. So I CAN’T ‘vote that way’. I am only allowed to vote for individual names. And write in myself for President. My vote really is just done out of a sense of obligation, and to make me feel good.

While you "feel good", you yap negatively about politicians you directly and indirectly put into office. But, hey, you feel good!

Voting for someone does not mean you vouch for them, that they espouse everything you believe; often times the two choices basically suck so it's a "lesser of two evils" scenario.

You can "love" someone one day and lose that "love" over time: as an aloalogy think of marriage, with the 50% or so divorce rate.

This goes above Geno’s pay grade. He just doesn’t understand the multi-factorial approach in voting. When I vote for myself for President, it doesn’t mean I expect to win. Sometimes I choose the ‘lesser of two evils’ approach.

Come to think of it, I’ve donated to an anesthesiologist who is so far right of me it’s hard for me to support a large swath of his policies. But I’ve met him, he’s REALLY bright, and I feel it is important for there to be some doctors in Congress to counteract the overall ‘lawyer bias’ in politics. Plus I like seeing him always referred to as ‘Congress’s only anesthesiologist.’ He’s from Maryland so I can’t actually vote for him.

As to MrV’s comment about ‘loving’ a politician then changing your mind, I did the opposite with Fetterman. I was a big anti, but now like him more than any Democrat I can think of!

Here's the problem with the current two party system: to my mind neither side is moderate enough.

Progressive idiocy vs. mean-spirited conservatism.

Where is there a "happy medium?"
