The 1980 U.S. / Russia hockey game was one of the most memorable things for me. I was not a hockey fan and was only 13 years old and didn't know much about the Olympics. I w as in the hospital ICU and was not expected to survive. In 1980 no electronics were allowed in ICU. I spent 6 weeks in there. with no TV, no radio, and obviously no internet. It was a horrible experience for a child as visitors were only allowed for 30 minutes a day. I remember my father explaining to me how the U.S. men's hockey team upset the Russians as a huge underdog. He made it sound magical. Months later after I got out of the hospital my father gave me a cassette tape of the radio broadcast that I listened to dozens of times.

What does Biles have to do with anything???????
Who cares

If you recall, in 2020 Biles was in much the same situation as Malinin. They called her the GOAT. She was featured in all the ads and constantly hyped by NBC. Then when the lights were brightest she got the yips. Maybe her presence and her face on the big screen made the Quad God choke.

Just a bit of humor. I have nothing but respect for the grit and perseverance that led to Malinin’s unprecedented achievements. He has nothing to prove.

I understand the arguments for excluding Russia as a country from the Olympics, but it just isn't "the same" without them and all they bring to the games, good and bad.

They participated during the Cold War and back then we all feared being incinerated by nuclear fire.

Besides, the Russian invasion of Ukraine which ostensibly led to the banning is little different than Trump invading Venezuela, seizing tankers, and waving his saber at Canada and Greenland.

Perhaps the USA should also be banned, if not for war crimes than for arrogant assholery?

Denying Russia a slot only fractures the world's politics even further.

Russia has changed
They aren't close to what they were
Take the 1980 hockey team
Great team. Paid soldiers not allowed to play in the NHL
Times have changed
About 30 athletes born in Russia now compete for other countries

The other thing I remember about 1980 was Eric Heiden. He won gold in every speed skating event there was, from 500m to 10’000m setting at least one WR. But here’s the kicker that makes him my favorite Olympic athlete ever. After the games an interviewer asked him what was next. Would he keep skating? He said “I think I’ll try cycling.” The next time I saw him on TV he was racing in the 1986 Tour de France.

Arrogant assholery isn't an international crime. If is was, the US would never be able to participate in any international sporting event ever again.

I think the Russian invasion of Ukraine is the precipitating event that fractured the world's politics even further. There should be no reward but harsh punishment for Russia's crimes.

Only reason Trump didn't advocate for Putin to be in the Olympics, is he didn't think of it. Sticking another thorn in the side of the Europeans would make as much sense as the rest of his NATO relationships. Russia isn't fiddling away in some distant country, they are right on the borders and that is why Europe is overly concerned,

Germany needs to get nukes, and quickly.

So does Japan.

The fat oat shits on his allies so they need to readjust, nuke up, and let the games begin.

Should be interesting.

Japan will never have nukes as long as the royal family are generally pacifists and WW2 is within living memory.

Germany is prohibited from having their own by treaty. But, yeah, I agree with you. Peace through strength.
