How many did they show smoking. In that
time period all men smoked. Pipes, cigars,
roll your own cigarettes. I'm betting none
or very few were shown smoking.

I just watched a 7 part series on the Roosevelt
family. FDR smoked 4+ packs a day for most
of his life, unfiltered Camels in a holder. It's
what killed him. There are hundreds of pics
of him with that holder in his mouth, in every
cartoon of him he had one, it was his trademark.

Yet in the documentary, I watched for it and they
only showed it once or twice near the end. They
never mentioned that he was a chain smoker.

Good point. Very little smoking. Lots of drinking. The director's choice to handle time passing with narration (e.g., "a year later...") rather than a montage of bored sailors kicking it on the deck playing an accordion and carving scrimshaw may have a lot to do with it.

How was the drinking portrayed. Sailors were
given some rum every day, but drunkeness
was not encouraged or tolerated. You saved
that for when you were ashore.

I generally don't like movies about ships anyway.
Too claustrophobic, and I'm not a fan of the
ocean in the first place. Submarine movies,
forget it. I have yet to see Perfect Storm and
probably never will.

Ashore, lots of libations flowing. On the ship, not so much, except the officers. In fact, one of the characters is a recovering alcoholic who is constantly turning down offers of drink.

If you don't like claustrophobic films, this will definitely be on your "no fly" list. The boats are small and the ocean is big. One character has to climb inside a whale carcass to draw out the last of the precious spermaceti. On the other hand, this is a man's movie about men doing manly things. There are only three female characters who have a total of like 5 minutes of screen time.

I enjoy submarine movies. "Run Silent, Run Deep" is one of my favorites. I also enjoyed "The Hunt for Red October". I think you would too. It's got Sean Connery in it.

Warning: Some may find this disturbing. Even dead whales are dangerous:

I saw Red October, it was an awfully big
submarine. As far as the manly men stuff,
there was a lot of buggery on those old
ships, that's what cabin boys were for.
Manly man stuff indeed. More like man
on man stuff.

Yep. It was a good film. Definitely not for EB due to the claustrophobic factor.. "Operation Petticoat", "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea", and "Fantastic Voyage" were other good ones.

It's the older subs I don't like, where
you had to be 5' 5" or shorter to
serve on one.

I read the book "In the Heart of the Sea"; one of the things that stuck with me ... hmmm, guess it could be a spoiler

the ship is sunk and the ones who didn't make it into the lifeboats were the lucky ones perhaps. At least one was finally rescued; they had resorted to cannibalism. Only one guy left alive [or one or two, can't remember] ... but this one guy, they couldn't get him to let go of the human femur bone that was still gripped in his hands to suck on. What an image! Wonder if that will be in the movie?

Your spoiler is definitely a spoiler. The scenes you describe are a large part of the film.

In the deification of whales that has occurred since the 1960's, the belief that whales are non-aggressive has become commonplace. In fact, all whales can be extremely aggressive, but in particular the toothed whales. I have personally seen whale fights off of Hawaii.

Other than Killer Whales they don't tend to bite. But they do ram things. They can also twist their backends and tails and deliver a crushing blow with thousands of pounds of force.

Herman Melville was only a year old when the Essex went down, but the story had a strong effect on his imagination.
