If it came to movies right now, I'd find a foreign film or a film from the last twenty years on Prime Video ... or The Tunnel Series... IF I could ever remember when it is on. I think a grade B 1950s thriller would be a better movie than a super box office hit of today with Spider Zombies and Tits.

I chose movies where he was a Producer, but rejected movies where he was just an EXECUTIVE producer. For example he was an EXECUTIVE producer on the Transformers movies, but it clearly isn't the primary creative energy.

The following list is worldwide gross for just directorial films

  1. $1029.20 Jurassic Park - 6/11/1993
  2. $786.60 Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull 5/22/2008
  3. $717.00 E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial - 6/11/1982
  4. $618.60 The Lost World: Jurassic Park - 5/23/1997
  5. $591.70 War of the Worlds - 6/29/2005
  6. $481.80 Saving Private Ryan
  7. $474.20 Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
  8. $470.70 Jaws
  9. $374.00 The Adventures of Tintin
  10. $358.40 Minority Report
  11. $354.00 Raiders of the Lost Ark
  12. $352.10 Catch Me If You Can
  13. $333.10 Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
  14. $321.30 Schindler's List
  15. $300.90 Hook
  16. $288.10 Close Encounters of the Third Kind
  17. $275.30 Lincoln
  18. $235.90 A.I. Artificial Intelligence
  19. $219.40 The Terminal
  20. $177.60 War Horse
  21. $165.50 Bridge of Spies
  22. $130.40 Munich
  23. $92.50 1941
  24. $74.10 Always
  25. ------------- BFG

One interesting item is that Spielberg who will be age 70 this December, is widely credited with creating the modern movie business with it's emphasis on summer blockbusters. But he never really moved into the latest age of global blockbusters that Christopher Nolan inhabits.

Even BFG is a perfect example. He knew going in that the movie was only aimed at the very young and was never going to be a blockbuster. But he seems to be following personal goals.

Not that Christopher Nolan doesn't have intellectual goals as well. The themes of many of his movies are very thought provoking.
  1. $1,084.90 The Dark Knight Rises
  2. $1,003.00 The Dark Knight
  3. $825.50 Inception
  4. $675.10 Interstellar
  5. $372.70 Batman Begins
  6. $113.70 Insomnia
  7. $109.70 The Prestige
  8. $39.70 Memento

Spielberg is in the enviable position of picking and choosing the films that he enjoys making. This includes working with folks of his choosing. Tin Tin, A.I., and even B.F.G. are personal projects that only he could make.

He gets on board as Executive Producer when he needs to replenish the fundage. Transformers is the best example of that. Sort of like how the football team in the NCAA funds the women's cross country team.

'The BFG' Could Be Steven Spielberg's Most Significant Flop

As a filmmaker, Mr. Spielberg will be fine. Warner Bros./Time Warner Ready Player One is based on a very popular novel and will probably play to audiences young enough to devour the book and old enough to cling to its 80s-era nostalgia. The film adaptation, directed by Steven Spielberg, is slated to begin production in summer 2016 and premiere in spring 2018.

Man, did I get hoodwinked last night.
'In The Valley of Elah' with Tommy Lee
Jones. Started off great, he's retired
military and his Army son is missing.
Jones starts looking and soon finds
his son is dead. It goes on and on
with twists and turns, and he finds
that his Christian raised son was
turned into a drug addict and torturer
in Iraq.

Wtf, where is this going. We find at the
end that it was his best friend in the
Army who stabbed him 46 times because
they had an argument about something
and were both drunk. Iraq had turned
them into savages, apparently.

I then realized this was a Hollywood anti
Iraq anti Bush movie. My first clue was
Susan Sarandon playing the mother. I
had to laugh, what a waste of 2 hours.
The premise was ridiculous, I should have
read the negative reviews like I usually do.

Ghostbusters has been out for 5 days and
worldwide has only made back half of it's
costs. That's not good, they have make a
couple hundred million more to make a
profit. Tt gets a 5.2 rating on IMDB, which
is really really bad.

Look at the first page that comes up in reviews,
all are 1 or 2 stars:

Have you been living under a rock?

There was a weird online campaign amongst nerds living in their mom's basements to give Ghostbusters bad reviews on every site. Lots of man-babies were angry about four female Ghostbusters. (Also, they were probably angry about never having touched a female before in their real lives).

Many of those negative reviews were up before it even came out.

People do strange shit.

It's kind of scary. You could be a target of a cruel online hoax, and 5000 random people will volunteer to hunt you down before the real facts get out.

Horror and Vulgarity is where the money is. Conjuring #2 and Deadpool box office revenue in 4 days, compared to high budget films like Ghostbusters, The Legend of Tarzan , and Alice Through the Looking Glass

Conjuring #1 cost $20 million production, and sells $42 million in tickets in three days just in Northern America
Conjuring #2 cost $40 million production, and sells $40 million in tickets in three days just in Northern America

Conjuring movies have very good reviews by critics.

The reviews for Ghostbusters is no 'hoax', the BO
numbers speak for themselves. And just read the negative
reviews, they go into great detail about why it
sucks so badly.

Four full Days Northern America
$50,925,548 Ghostbusters (2016) | Production Budget: $144 million
$46,582,405 The Legend of Tarzan | Production Budget: $180 million
$44,817,191 Independence Day Resurgence| Production Budget: $165 million
$33,507,621 Alice Through the Looking Glass | Production Budget: $170 million
$22,716,809 The BFG | Production Budget: $140 million

Budgets are too high for these relatively banal sequels, remakes and children's movies. The number of films with over $100 million budgets just grows every year. I guess they are hoping to tap into an international market that is familiar with the characters.
