Will a black ever own an NFL team?

"Equality?"

As if.

I think this is newsworthy. As of right now, the 32 team NFL has one black head coach. Approximately 75% of the players are black. Probably will increase to 2 or 3 once hires are made to fill vacancies. Brian Flores almost certainly gets hired by someone.

When there are only 32 NFL teams, black coaches will almost always be overrepresented or underrepresented when compared to population.

Brian Flores being fired from the Dolphins was a huge head-scratcher for me, but given that it was a black dude that fired him, I'm not really sure what you can say about that one. On the other hand, Marvin Lewis was fired Looooonnggggg after it had been time for him to go, so who knows? Flores might end up as Chicago's coach, I kind of hope so.

I mean, you need four black coaches to get you to where you, 'Should be' compared to the US population...but it's still just a sample size of 32. There are sometimes more than four. There were five in 2015, so technically, more than population representative.

I'm not sure what the percentage of players has to do with anything. Some players couldn't coach and some coaches haven't played at the highest levels. Some coaches went directly into coaching after they got out of college.

Couldn't tell you, but I don't know how often they get put up for sale. Khan (Jaguars) is a Pakistani-American, if it helps.

Russell Wilson has shown interest in team ownership, at least partial; given the way things are going in Seattle he may be the first.

It would be great to give him a slice, e.g. one or two percent, in exchange for inspired QB play now and a seat at the mgt. table when he retires.

Go deep.

First you need a black worth about $4 billion.

In the late 1990s Walter Payton was trying to get some kind of deal together but he died. Teams are probably worth ten times as much now.

I obviously have no objection to that, but most NFL teams (all but one) are privately owned as well as owned by individuals or families. I'd obviously not object to a partnership ownership structure, but I would be surprised if there was a current owner willing to do that as opposed to it being solely or family owned.

I suspect the mostly black players care.

Maybe it's the last glass ceiling. I'm not going to say that's not possibly the case. Could be.

I think the coaches question is just a matter of 32 being a small sample.

The NFL is pretty specific on ownership. You have to have a senior partner who owns most of the team. Corporations are forbidden, they want individuals. You cannot pledge a team as collateral for a loan to purchase. Minority owners still have to be approved, Rush Limbaugh was famously told not to even apply for no good reason.
