the colony no doubt determines what happens to males, perhaps most are just killed? But the colony can't determine the sex.

Yes, in late summer the free-loading drones are dragged out of the hive and stung to death by the worker bees.

Something that humans should probably adopt.

In humans the male is dragged out but then forced to pay alimony and child support.......

Please refer to the recent film, "Kingsman: The Secret Service" for an action flick take on this concept. An obligatory "WARNING: This film contains Samuel L. Jackson rantings" is required every time this film is mentioned.

I remember that Canadian humorist who was gathering petition signers for advancing the age to sixty five, instead of sixty two, that Canadians are set adrift on the ice floes.

In humans, sometimes its the female who has to drag those deflated implants up and down the street when the male doesn't pay the child support.

Sometimes maybe, but in the USA family law is biased much in favor of females. Enough of this sidetrack and back to the bees, please.

I saw a news story about a young girl who, after getting stung by a bee, studied up on them and opened a lemonade stand with honey as the sweetener. Long story short, she is now a very successful entrepreneur. The thing that caught my attention about the story, was that they were describing the decline in the bee population over footage of what appeared to be a large hornet walking amongst the flowers.

Is this technically correct? Is "Honey Bee" a species, or are there other species of bees, wasps, hornets, yellow jackets, etc. that produce honey?

"Honey Bee" is not a species. There are multiple kinds of honey bees including Russians, Italians, and the African "killer bees." AFIK the other stinging insects do not produce honey.

Here is a link to the video of the story. http://www.cbsnews.com/news/beesweet-lemonade-founder-mikaila-ulmer-raises-awareness-honeybee-decline/
I'm pretty sure the image at :35 is a hornet, and a pretty big one at that.
