Once again someone has made a list of some ethereal quality. Whatever iconic means, I would have thought that part of it would be that you can't get the song out of your head. I think probably 90% of the words in "Smells Like Teen Spirit " are unintelligible.

Smells Like Teen Spirit
Load up on guns, bring your friends
It's fun to lose and to pretend
She's over bored and self assured
Oh no, I know a dirty word

Hello, hello, hello, how low? [x3]
Hello, hello, hello!

With the lights out, it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto
An albino
A mosquito
My libido
Yeah, hey, yay

I'm worse at what I do best
And for this gift I feel blessed
Our little group has always been
And always will until the end

Hello, hello, hello, how low? [x3]
Hello, hello, hello!

With the lights out, it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto
An albino
A mosquito
My libido
Yeah, hey, yay

And I forget just why I taste
Oh yeah, I guess it makes me smile
I found it hard, it's hard to find
Oh well, whatever, never mind

Hello, hello, hello, how low? [x3]
Hello, hello, hello!

With the lights out, it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto
An albino
A mosquito
My libido

A denial! [x9]

I agree, instantly recognizable and "sticky" in your neurons. Probably generational, but I could not even hum the tune to "Teen Spirit". On the other hand "Best of My Love" is one of the few songs I actually paid money for.

Oddly, it seems to help your ranking on this list if you or your lead singer are dead...

How can a list of the songs "most" anything be taken seriously if there isn't even one by Olivia Newton John?

Computer scientist and musician Dr. Mick Grierson examined songs featured in seven ‘all-time best’ lists from sources like Rolling Stone and NME, and ran them through analytical software to compare their key, beats per minute, chord variety, lyrical content, timbral variety, and sonic variance.

It’s worth noting though, that, yes, Nirvana is great, but this study ran off a very limited sample set of songs, and was British-leaning, which explains why the top Oasis song is “Live Forever” at No. 17, not “Wonderwall.” Also, Grierson was commissioned to conduct the study by the car company Fiat, who were trying to find a song to promote the FIAT 500 with. (Singer-songwriter Ella Eyre is going to re-master the song to for a TV commercial.)

Smells Like Teen Spirit is a gutteral raw that defined my late teens. It makes me FEEL on a level few other songs do, and feel in a physical, intense way, thats somewhere near anger and rage, but more productive and less destructive.

Wonderwall is a terrible soppy song, while Live Forever was a better track. It's still sub-Beatle-esque indie bobbins, but weren't too bad.

If they'd asked me first, I'd have charged them half what the study cost to tell them "Red Barchetta" by RUSH

Half the last stanza:

Drive like the wind
Straining the limits of machine and man
Laughing out loud with fear and hope
I've got a desperate plan

This Fiat 500 that is the subject of this commercial is produced in Toluca.

Fiat made a car called a Barchetta up until 10 years ago. Despite the name it does not resemble the classic Barchetta, the Ferrari 166MM, from the late 1940's.

"Barchetta" is Italian for a small boat.

Italian names tend to sound better if you don't know the meaning.

The purpose of these kind of lists is to bait us into arguing about them. They do this in the sports world all the time. Best NFL defense of all time. Best defensive short stop, etc. The lists are so subjective that they are guaranteed to touch off debate, but just to make sure they will place something sure to be controversial like listing Fran Tarkington as the #1 best QB of all time. Don't fall for it.

Having said that: No Sinatra? No Doors? WTF!
