Say hello to Boeing's newest airliner — the 737 Max

JFK-LHR= 5546 km

The new Boeing 737/Max 8 will maintain almost the same range as the A320 neo
737/Max 8
Range fully loaded: 3,620 nmi (6,704 km)
A320-200
range
3,100 nmi (5,700 km)
3,300 nmi (6,100 km) with Sharklets
A320neo
Maximum range, fully loaded 3,700 nmi (6,900 km)

It seems to have a few more seats (new relaxed FAA rules)
737/Max 8
seats == 200 (1-class, MAX 200), 175 (1-class, typical), 162 (2-class, typical)
seats for A320-200 or A320neo
195 (A320 Enhanced, certification) BRAND NEW
180 (1-class, maximum) LCC like Spirit or Volaris or VivaAerobus
164 (1-class, typical)
150 (2-class, typical) or Interjet 1 class

It is not clear if Aeromexico can take advantage of the increased range of the B737/Max 8, as all destinations in Americas are within range of the current 737-800, except for:
Buenos Aires Argentina
Rio de Janeiro Brazil
São Paulo Brazil
Santiago Chile

These four are still outside of the range of the 737/MAX .

I think the actual test model had split scimitar winglets.

If they'd given it a raked wing, it would be just like a cute baby 787, complete with sky interiors ;)

https://www.crossborderxpress.com/

Cross Border Express to get to the Tijuana airport and park on the US side for $10/day opened a few weeks ago. Presumably Aeroméxico flights to Shanghai-Pudong will be popular instead of schlepping through LAX or SFO.

Other options from TIJUANA
Volaris to resort towns of Acapulco, Cancún, Mazatlán, Puerto Vallarta, and Veracruz
Aéreo Calafia to resort towns La Paz, Loreto

Volaris to Oakland CA may be to complex for some San Diego county residents, but it depends on price.

Interjet Mexico City, Aguascalientes, Culiacán, Guadalajara, León/El Bajío,
VivaAerobus Mexico City
Volaris Mexico City, Aguascalientes, Chihuahua, Ciudad Juárez, Ciudad Obregón, Colima, Culiacán, Durango, Guadalajara, Hermosillo, La Paz, León/El Bajío, Los Mochis, Monterrey, Morelia, Puebla, Queretaro, San José del Cabo, San Luis Potosí, Tepic, Torreón/Gómez Palacio, Uruapan, Zacatecas
Aeroméxico Mexico City, Guadalajara
Aeroméxico Connect Ciudad Juárez, Durango, Hermosillo, León/El Bajío, Monterrey

Interjet's advertising Tijuana's airport as a means to cross the border to the US.

It offers no details, but has a composite photo of the international pedestrian bridge connected to the plane.

Tijuana's Airport was built in 1951, and has probably always been more heavily used by people from San Diego County than from state of Baja. Los Angeles county has a much higher percentage of Latinos than San Diego county, but southern SD county is very Mexican. Chula Vista identifies as 58% Latino.

The airport terminal was expanded and renovated in 2002, when the extension of concourse A and B was built, allowing the terminal to double its capacity. Several taxiways were also expanded, to allow the operations of larger aircraft such as the Boeing 747.

Aeromexico began it's lease of four Boeing 777-200's on 22. Mar 2006, 28. Apr 2006, 28. Dec 2006, 05. Sep 2007 and began flights to Tokyo originating in Mexico City and stopping for fuel in Tijuana to mitigate effects of high and dry takeoffs from Mexico City. Planes were configured with 49 business seats and 228 standard seats. In April 2008 AM began flights to Shanghai, once again using TJ as a refueling stop and to pick up passengers from SD County.

Japan Airlines began service between San Diego Airport and Tokyo-Narita on December 2, 2012, using the Boeing 787 aircraft. Planes were configured with 42 business seats and 144 standard seats, but that killed the international Tokyo traffic at TJ.

I believe the 777-200's are on ten year leases, so they should be replaced with Dreamliners next year.

The first 737 MAX flew last Friday Jan 29th. It will take a year to obtain certification and get the plane into service. The launch customer will be Southwest (I wonder why?).

The infamous MAX 200 has been ordered by Ryanair. I wonder if it includes olive oil...

I understand the thinking by the manufacturers. Serious development money was spent on the MAX and the neo, but not nearly as much as it would take to develop a clean slate design.

But, seriously, they did not simply switch engines on the 767 or the A310, did they? Ok, maybe the times were different a decade or so ago when the 787 and A350 were designed. But keeping on older designs alive has its downsides, too. I wonder if a minor player, say Embraer, COMAC or even Mitsubishi might try for a clean slate narrow body replacement for the 737 and A320 and steal orders from the majors?

I don't ever remember Embraer designing a new commercial aircraft. It seems like they are just like the others who keep stretching their designs.

Yes, but since the majors seem to have developed a heightened risk allergy... One can see their point, mind. The A380 hasn't done as well as expected, and the 787, while popular, had that very bad high-profile issue with the batteries (Fire is the worst kind of risk on an airplane for many reasons, not the least of which is you can't just leave the plane mid-flight). Boeing, too, is having problems with its updated 747 (too few orders)

But Bombardier did put out the C series line. They're struggling with it, but at least they tried something new.

IMO the difference between economy and business class has become too great, and the price differential is greater still. Economy plus (in its various forms and designation), both falls short and is a bit too expensive for the average traveler. Something has to give.

You can certainly see their point. Boeing did not intend to release the B737-Max, but in August 2011, Boeing pushed back the decision to develop a 737 replacement with the launch of the updated and re-engined version of the 737 Next Generation. If they didn't Southwest threatened to go to the neoA320.

I wish they'd see mine. The airlines may buy and lease the planes, but the passengers ultimately pay for them.

Speaking of leasing, does anyone know what percentage of planes on average are owned vs leased by most airlines? When Mexicana went broke, I was surprised to learn they only owned 9 planes, with the rest, which were several dozen, leased.
