People were nuts for McD's in the 60's.
I mean insane nuts. Everybody went there,
especially for lunch. It was cheap and the
food was decent. HS kids practically lived there
if they had a car.

1960 Gino Marchetti of Baltimore Colt fame opens Gino Burger franchise. Radio commercial Feed A Family of 5 for a Dollar 95.
10 cent drink 14 cent fries 15 cent burger.
1968 Dating Josie, pick her and a GF up for lunch each day at her work Drive to Arby. No tax back then on carryout.
Milkshake 31 cents + Arby roast beef Sandwhich 69 cents $1 for a good lunch, thank you much.

Read "McDonald's Behind the Arches" like 20 years ago on a plane trip. Was fascinating. Almost failed many times until they got the real estate formula right. Even then until 1970 they could easily have been taken down. After that there was no stopping them. Today they are perhaps own more real estate than any other non-public entity.

I read that too. That book opened my eyes to the idea:

Q: "What business is McDonalds in?"
student answer: "Ummm, hamburgers, duh!"
"nope. Hamburgers is what they sell, but their business is real estate. That's where most of their revenue comes from."

By far.

Incidentally, McDonalds is about to roll out two new sizes of the Big Mac. The kid-sized Mac Jr, and the Grand Mac, which has 1/3 pound beef, as opposed to the 1/5 pound on the regular Big Mac. Already test marketed in Dallas and Columbus, OH. Hope they come to Washington.

John Glenn - one of those rare people that everyone loves. Don't think I've ever heard anyone speak negatively about him.

I read the Right Stuff
He was a real straight arrow
A lot of the astronauts liked to party and chase girls
Flying jets is dangerous, especially testing new jets
They worked hard and partied hard
This really pissed off John Glenn.
In turn, this really pissed off the partying astronauts. They thought he was an a-hole.

Was he 110? I thought he died 10
years ago. He was old when I was a
kid.

I think it said 95.

Clearly NASA saw something in him since he went up once then was a spokesman not an astronaut. Probably will forever have the record for longest time between space flights.

EDIT: He said something to the effect of "I always wanted to run for POTUS in the worst possible way and boy did I!" Gotta love a guy like that.

Time to start the 2017 pool soon. Seems each year a lot of notable folks pass around the winter holidays.

It was absolutely one of the very best progressive LPs. Tocatta and Karn Evil 9 3rd movement are timeless. Playing Tocatta in high school on my Jensen cassette deck in my '69 442, I always pictured Roman warriors marching off to war, swords a'flashin'.

After Keith Emerson shot himself a few months ago, can Carl Palmer be far behind?
