I'm not sure what this means? Arpaio was re-elected [not the last election], but he was elected and then re-elected because the voters of Maricopa county liked the way he performed his duty. Simple as that. He stuck out for being tough on crime. HIs supporters, some of them even in the last election that he did not win, still admired the way he carried out his job. Criminals are welcome to go elsewhere. Joe still has a lot of admirers. He was a pretty strict constitutionalist. Many of the locals want their sheriff to think that way.

Obviously in other places, other sheriffs perform differently. Take Charlottesville for instance. Apparently that sheriff prefers communists take over the town. If that is the way Va. feels about their community's, they have that right. But in that case, the police failed to serve and protect and stood down while people were being violated. Would you support jailing that police dept?

Here is an article about the insurrection group that organized the anti rally in Va, which has BLM as a member, having training to use violence against the police. These people are actively promoting armed violence against police. This is the group that so many on these boards support against the legal protesters in Va. Why would that change my mind? I don't care what other people do, when they are doing it for the wrong reason.

Joe is a hard nosed sherriff who can dish it out but not willing to take it. IMO. He expected his prisoners to take it hard, and would go round people up who had warrants. He can't follow the same rules he sets.

No respect for him is warranted or given.

When someone makes a really big deal about punishment or law & order, you have a right to hold them to the same standard. Who made a bigger deal of it than Joe Arpaio?

He expected people who turned out to be innocent to do time in his jail if they ended there and not flout the law even while they waited to be cleared.

But what did he do? He ignored court orders.
