He was an original. I remember seeing him on a small local channel wrestling show, the camera caught him slipping a razor blade from the sweat bands on his wrist, slicing his forehead, then putting the razor back.

That is the way it was before about 1984. McMahon decided families were the better market and blood was bad for business so the practice died out. If you watch some old matches on YT it is clear to see the guy blade himself. In one match the announcer/promoter realizes that something went wrong and starts yelling, "HE'S HURT!" The guy needed medical attention but the promoter had to actually get the ref to believe his stopping it was not Kayfabe or the ref would have ignored him and kept the match moving.
