Roughly two-thirds of those age 2 and older watching “Empire” last Wednesday night (66.9%) were African-Americans. .

Well, the show stinks. Bad writing and soap
opera acting. The bad reviews are really
really bad. This is one of the nicer ones:

"You have powerhouse actors like Terrence and Tajiri, and this is what you do with them? You have them portray over-stereotyped, dull, insipid buffoons who lack depth, character or intelligence? This is what Fox gives us as an interesting story involving Black America? When you think about the wit, creativity, artistry, hard work and brain power that goes into the business of Hip Hop, this show is a slap in the face. The characters are uninspired, poorly written, predictable and hackneyed. I expected far more. This was a MAJOR let down."
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.

Dancing in September (2000) was a drama about black writers and network executives in television. It's about ambition and success and stereotypes and what sells on TV.

At the time DL Hughley had a sitcom about a family from the "old neighborhood" who moved up to a middle class mostly white and Asian suburb. Which seemed to be a common theme of most black sitcoms from The Jefferson's to Good Times to The Hughley's to Blackish.

What's very common now is blacks in
positions of power on TV. They're mayors
and police commissioners, and heads
of the FBI and CIA. And more women
than men. You're far more likely to see
blacks either as drug dealers, or as
someone in charge. For some reason,
we don't see them in middle of the road jobs.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.

Fargo. I can't decide if I like Fargo
or not. I missed the first season.
The 2nd season is, well, odd. It
has people acting in really strange
ways and we're supposed to think
that's normal for them.

A woman hits a man with her car
and drives home with him sticking
thru the windshield. She's parks
in the garage and makes dinner like
nothing is wrong. Later her husband
hears something in the garage and
is attacked by the 'not dead' man
and the husband stabs him with lawn
shears. Rather than call the cops, they
stick him in the deep freeze and go
on with their lives.

The whole show is like this, bizarre
things happen and nobody reacts
to them in the traditional way.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.

I watched the first 7 episodes of season 2 yesterday and I don't know what to think about it. I almost turned it of during episode 2 but powered through it.

I also did not see season 1 but heard it is not relevant to season 2.
At my age a Life In Prison sentence is not much of a detrrent.

It reminds me of a Cohn Bros movie, like
Burn After Reading. Nobody reacts to
anything in a normal fashion. The CIA
and FBI would rather cover up crimes
because of the paperwork involved
if they prosecute them.

Maitreyi Krishnaswamy, Director, Verizon FiOS TV talks about the future of commercial TV. She talks a lot about tablets.
She got some headlines for admitting that she has pretty much cut the cord in her own life.

She does mention the big 40 networks, which I assume are these.

Teenagers try to identify sitcom themes from 20 years ago.

There is one theme song that everyone knows.

Layoffs Hit ABC as Rumors About the Network's Future Swirl

Is it possible Disney thinks there is little future? Would they spin it off with ESPN as a package?

Average viewers in Millions
5.158 ABC average
6.195 NBC average
3.517 FOX average
9.172 CBS average

With the Average viewers of broadcast at record low, and ABC without any sports has revenue way below YouTube, discussions of selling broadcast have continued for some time.

With Disney there is a lot of speculation that they should start by selling the owned and operated ABC stations to Bloomburg
