Fair would be you abolish income tax and just have a Universal Sales Tax. Explain this: What possible sense does it make for someone who is drawing Government benefits in excess of the amount that he/she is being taxed anyway to pay 28% in Federal Income Taxes? If your income and family situation is such that you qualify for Government benefits, in general, it really doesn't make very much sense for you to pay a high tax rate. If you want to get rid of their benefits AND tax them the same rate, then you might as well just increase minimum wage to $15/hour, because a couple couldn't reasonably survive without both of them making at least that. I would love that. If everyone was paying they might realize things are not "free."
But minimum wage has nothing to do with it. You cannot legislate higher pay as costs will just go up to pay for the new wage. People getting government benefits will not be at the 28% rate. The President is a fink. |

Mission146 Administrator Member since: Oct 24, 2012 Threads: 23 Posts: 4147 | It should also be mentioned that, beyond $142,800 in earnings, an individual no longer pays into Social Security Tax, since we're discussing tax rates. However, they start paying an additional 0.9% to Medicare for everything after $200,000 and then everything else with tax brackets, of course. That said, there is a pretty big jump in the base tax rate for the bracket that starts very close to that number. "War is the remedy that our enemies have chosen..let us give them all they want." I only wish I could post such direct facts to all arguments. You believe in an invisible god, and dismiss people who say they are trans? Really? |

You can Legislate it and it is, indeed, Legislated. You just can't dramatically increase it in a very short amount of time...not even so much because prices will go up, but because there will be panic and the prices will likely overcorrect. I think that there definitely has to be a minimum wage, or we can guess what would happen. It's pretty easy to guess because that's why there is a minimum wage in the first place. Anyway, as far as the MW itself goes---just Index to inflation and problem solved. You could even have a percentage cap on it to protect against inordinate years, and obviously, MW could never go down from wherever it was the year before. I'm just going to go ahead and take your word for that, if that's okay. "War is the remedy that our enemies have chosen..let us give them all they want." William T. Sherman |

petroglyph Member since: Aug 3, 2014 Threads: 25 Posts: 6227 | If only. https://www.census.gov/newsroom/press-releases/2018/cb18-tps03.html "Approximately two-thirds (69.3 percent) of custodial parents who were due child support received some payments from noncustodial parents, while only 43.5 percent reported receiving the full amount of child support due" "Of the 1.6 million custodial parents with incomes below the poverty level who were supposed to receive child support in 2015, 39.2 percent received full payments." "https://brandongaille.com/23-deadbeat-dads-statistics/" There's just to many myriads of story's to post here. And many are conflicting. I was told [when I was paying child support] that at one time or other, as many as 85% of dads not in the household didn't pay cp or did not pay on time or the total amount ordered. The statistics on missing dads and deadbeat dads should be added to any sex education classes taught in schools. Not claiming guys are bad, but the statistics say most absent fathers won't pay child support like they are supposed to. And there is really a lack of any enforcement to compel non paying ex spouses to pay up on time. Many of the single mothers I've spoken with think of child support after a few years of separation as a bonus payment because they get the subsidy so rarely. IMO, fathers need to be named on birth certificates and there needs to be stricter enforcement on non paying spouses be they men or women. AFAIC, if you owe child support and aren't working or looking for work on the week ends, you may as well be in jail, or on a road gang, helping the state support your spawn. rant over The last official act of any government is to loot the treasury. Mission146 Administrator Member since: Oct 24, 2012 Threads: 23 Posts: 4147 | For example, the increase to $7.25 Federal Minimum wage was in 2009, so let's start with 2010: 2010: 7.25 * 1.0164 = $7.37 ($7.37 would be 2011 minimum wage) 2011: 7.37 * 1.03 = $7.59 2012: 7.59 * 1.017 = $7.72 2013: 7.72 * 1.015 = $7.84 2014: 7.84 * 1.008 = $7.90 2015: 7.90 * 1.007 = $7.96 2016: 7.96 * 1.021 = $8.13 2017: 8.13 * 1.021 = $8.30 2018: 8.30 * 1.019 = $8.46 2019: 8.46 * 1.023 = $8.65 2020: 8.65 * 1.014 = $8.77 With that, the minimum wage this year would be $8.77. We may be looking at a 5%+ inflation rate this year, but 5% is probably right about where I would cap any possible increase to Federal Minimum Wage. EDIT: And, if you ask if I would be fine with increasing FED MW from $7.25 to $8.77 immediately and then indexing to inflation, my answer would be, "Sure, that's probably fine."
