... hoping a certain person dies on a holiday weekend in order to have more reason to party, is pond scum in my book.

I don't think any demographic is at risk except the old.

As of 2016, about 675,000 people have died of HIV/AIDS in the U.S. since the beginning of the HIV epidemic, with (at that time) close to 13,000 people with AIDS in the United States dying each year. With improved treatments and better prophylaxis against opportunistic infections, death rates have quite significantly declined.[4

If 40% get infected and 1% die, this pandemic will have a death toll of 1.3 million, but in much less time.

Here's how fast it spread:

On February 6, Italy had only 3 cases.

Fast forward 31 days: as of today, Italy has 7,375 cases and 366 deaths.

While I'm not going to blame Trump for the coronavirus, my perception of the Republican administration, especially this one is the same as I've been complaining since the beginning. Even if there was a warning 2 years ago, they would have ignored it. They still would be dismantling or gutting parts of various programs, health, safety and environment, and social as a waste of money or anti-business up until something becomes a problem.

Same as it ever was.

For those who want to see proof of change: The web has satelite photos of the diminished crowds at sites in Mecca.
Have not seen any of Kirkland, WA or San Francisco, CA or Las Vegas, Nevada.

Futures are down this morning due to the OPEC price war, that sent Crude oil futures plunging 25% overnight.

80,000 deaths in this country in 2018 due to the flu. Globally 291,000 - 646,000 die every year from it.

But the virus that has killed 3,400 out of about 100,000 cases, is the end of humanity.

You cannot worry about every "warning" you get. And yes, many programs are wasteful and anti-business, serving no net good function. This is reality. When you are an adult you have to make decisions to cut certain things for the net good. And as a grown-up you have to realize that bad things can happen no matter what it is you do.

My advice is turn off the news for a few days and see if you notice a problem. I doubt you will. OTOH there has been media caught emptying store shelves to film in front of to show a crisis so that the sheep can go running scared.

Pretty devastating number
3.4% death rate
Its 3400 unexpected deaths if not for the virus
About 2700 died in the world trade center and the country and world were devastated by those deaths.
Were conservatives saying the number of people that died in the tower is meaningless because so many more die from the flu
The 3400 number from the virus is a growing number every day. How long to 4k, a few days?
These are people that would be alive if not for the virus
People are rightfully concerned

Concerned, yes. Panic? No.

The number of deaths is not meaningless; it is also not the end of humanity.

These things come along every once in a while and they are usually a surprise. We're not ready for them because it is hard to be ready for something that you didn't see coming.

The market will fall today but it is not just the virus causing the volatility. Some of the down days it was the main cause; other ones, it was not the only one.
