Sure are taking it super serious. And it surely is far FAR from all over, even for the vaccinated.
Though we in the West are normalising Covid as endemic, China and Shanghai are draconian in their approach to near zero tolerance of the disease. Probably the only Country able to be so draconian in suppressing the people. I'm not making a moral judgement.

China's zero covid strategy is changing.

"3,450. That’s the total number of “asymptomatic” Covid cases reported in Shanghai on Monday according to China’s National Health Commission—nearly 70% of the country’s total number.
Surprising Fact
China has reported a total of 4,638 deaths from Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic. Earlier this month, China reported two new Covid deaths, ending a nearly 14-month streak of zero fatalities. Despite this, China continues to have the lowest per-capita death rate for any country other than Burundi."

OK we take China's death stats with a pinch of salt, but compare and contrast with USA and Europe where total deaths per capita are a thousand times worse!

Right now in the UK we are having a massive spike in cases just as all restrictions are lifted. A crazy policy IMHO
"Covid cases have climbed by a million in a week in the UK, data from the Office for National Statistics reveals.
Swab tests suggest about one in every 16 people is infected, as the contagious Omicron variant BA.2 continues to spread.
That's just under 4.3 million people, up from 3.3 million the week before."

On the ground, I see this as a fair few vaccinated family and friends are currently ill with covid after letting their guard down with parties and meetings.

Thank **** the later versions are less deadly. If/when we get a more deadly variant, we will be screwed again as the barriers have been discarded. Except in China! Personally, I think their zero covid policy is all about avoiding the shock of whatever the next variant brings, A next variant that we in the West are not yet considering.

Time will tell

3 per Million in China
2400 per million in UK
2518 per Million in Russia
3000 per Million in USA

We already know that one's protection from the virus diminishes over so many months with the current vaccines. Hopefully we can get protection stretched out to at least an annual shot. Some people who got the vaccine could have contracted a mild case of covid later without knowing it. Their protection would likely be longer.

From the link on strategy, it seems crazy? The streets are bare, transportation is non existent. Those that have self quarantined in Shanghai the last month will now be ordered to quarantine. I hope they stored enough supplies? On a world note, if there wasn't a disruption in the supply chain for products mostly produced in China, prepare for a disruption now.

Maybe China is putting this effort into the current variant, or jic of a new variant? I've read the new Delta/Omicron variant lurks around somewhere? But maybe they know something we don't? Got to hand it to them though on having a death rate 1/1000th of ours.

This is the type of lockdown they've been doing for a couple of years. Did that lead to supply issues to the rest of the world?
If you didnt notice then you probably won't now.

I think it is very much forward thinking, rather than being on the back foot. Right or wrong, the death rate comparison is staggering. Who knows the characteristics of the next variant. I guess Shanghai doesn't want to be the first to find out and at these rates, they won't be.

Do we really believe anything China tells us?

They have plenty of reasons to lie about things and they are not our friends in any way.

Too many people put too much trust in China and it is to our detriment.

I did find one article that touted China's numbers as being correct...but it was a Socialist publication..

Their death rate per case of Covid is 3 times Canada's and nothing special against most countries. 3.3% of the people who caught Covid in China died.

(CNN)The highly contagious Omicron subvariant BA.2 is now the dominant strain of Covid-19 in the United States, causing an estimated 54.9% of all new Covid-19 infections last week, according to new data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The hardest hit region continues to be the Northeast, where BA.2 is causing more than 70% of all cases.

I spoke too soon when I mentioned not hearing anything about Covid in days and implying we were out of the woods with Covid. I have gotten multiple ads about Covid just today. Must have something to do with the new Variant circling the world. At least we're not facing Shutdowns and Lockdowns.

Ah, but what if mutations cause it to get much worse, say a 40% lethality rate: then what?

We sure as hell won't run around maskless without any lockdowns.

Hopefully the mutations will continue to be favorable.

Wifey told me government is allowing second booster shots. It will be my fourth when I get it. I’ll read a bit about it first to see what the timing interval should be. I do hope it becomes a yearly shot in the future. I think mask wearing in indoor public places here is under 2% now. I think you still have to wear them in doctor’s offices and airports. If you are going to allow mask free 99% of the time it is just plain stupid to require it 1% of the time!
