One of the best bets I ever made was on Clinton to win the 96 election. $500 at even money. That was by far the biggest bet I ever made at that time.

I can't believe you found somebody to take the bet. Bob Dole was awful and Clinton won in a landslide if I recall correctly. I didn't even bother voting because I knew what was going to happen.

The guy really disliked Dole and said he was taking insurance. However, he was a politically sharp guy. He probably knew it was a terrible bet on his end and was just being nice to me. I was an expectant father in a one-income family at the time, so maybe he was just being charitable. I could picture him doing that. He was not as foolish with other bets we made after that when I wasn't struggling financially.

Yes, you're right. It was a landslide for Clinton. I voted for some third-party candidate, just to make a statement vote against the two-party system.

All I remember about him is his mother invented White Out. A product that has probably gone out a business since the invention of the home computer.

Not at all. You can still need to white stuff out to make a scan.

The Republican candidate for the 6 previous elections was:
1972 Nixon - won
1976 Ford - lost
1980 Reagan - won
1984 Reagan - won
1988 Bush - won
1992 Bush - lost

In 1996 Bob Dole won 19 states, 18 of which had voted Republican in 5 or 6 of the previous 6 elections. The sole exception was Georgia who had voted for Jimmy Carter twice, but was now becoming more Republican. (Electoral College was 379 to 159)

============== did not vote Democratic once from 1972-1992 (6 elections)
6 Oklahoma
6 Kansas
6 Utah
6 Nebraska
6 Idaho
6 Alaska
6 North Dakota
6 South Dakota
6 Wyoming
6 Indiana
6 Virginia
============== Southern states that voted Carter in 1976
5 Alabama
5 Mississippi
5 North Carolina
5 South Carolina
5 Texas
============== Mountain states voted Cinton in 1992
5 Montana
5 Colorado
============== voted Carter in 1976 & 1980 and Clinton in 1992
3 Georgia

Arizona was the only state that had voted Republican in 6 previous elections, but did not vote for Bob Dole.

Dole had 9 fewer electoral college votes than Bush had earned during his re-election campaign in 1992.
Dole won Montana, Colorado and Georgia which Bush had lost, but Dole lost Arizona & Florida which Bush had won.

You weren't the only one.
104.4 million votes in 1992
96.3 million votes in 1996

Bush won 39 million votes in 1992 with Perot winning 19.7 million and Bill Clinton winning 44.9 million
Dole won 39 million votes in 1996 with Perot winning 8.1 million and Bill Clinton winning 47.4 million

Obama's re-election didn't have nearly as big a drop in total votes (2.1 million)
131.3 million in 2008
129.1 million in 2012

The one thing you can unequivocally say about Trump is that he made people vote
136.7 million in 2016
158.4 million in 2020
