Actually "Deep Impact" was a top 10 box office film in 1998. It ranked #8 behind Armageddon #2 which had a similar plot device about an asteroid or a comet headed towards the Earth. Scientists preferred "Deep Impact" as Armageddon was more of a cowboy story.

President Lindberg portrays a Black President (of the planet Earth) in the 1997 science-fiction film "The Fifth Element" but he has a fairly comic role and his skin color is never mentioned.

But Morgan Freeman as president Tom Beck in the 1998 film "Deep Impact" was probably the most dignified performance to that date of a black president. His skin color is never mentioned either. More than one person has credited Morgan Freeman with laying the groundwork that allowed people to envision the election of Barack Obama a decade later.

Jesse Jackson had run for President in 1984 and in 1988, but the majority of Americans could not envision Jesse Jackson as POTUS.

The old girl shows up in more than one movie, emblematic of the end of times and a drastic change of the guard.

I sort of think that Planet of the Apes established the theme, and filmmakers just took it from there.

Planet of the Apes (1969)
Escape from New York (1981)
Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987)
Batman Forever (1995)
Judge Dredd (1995)
Independence Day (1996)
Deep Impact (1998)
X-Men (2000)
A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)
Godzilla: Final Wars (2004)
The Day After Tomorrow (2004)
Cloverfield (2008)

Turbocharging was first used in a production model in 1962. Most of the big expensive engines used in European luxury cars use turbocharging to get even more power. Prior to 2008 it was rare for an engine under 2.0 liters to be turbocharged. For Model Year 2022 the following “makes” have turbocharged engines larger than 3.6 liters:
Porsche Liters 3.7
Maserati Liters 3.8
Ferrari Liters 3.9
Aston Martin Liters 4.0
Audi
Bentley
Lamborghini
Mclaren
Mercedes-Benz
Porsche
BMW Liters 4.4
Aston Martin Liters 5.2
Bentley Liters 6.0
BMW Liters 6.6
Rolls-Royce Liters 6.7
Bugatti Liters 8.0

The percentage of automobiles with turbocharged engines is growing exponentially as they are being used to maintain horsepower while meeting new CAFE requirements changed under President Obama. The number of turbocharged engines with less than 2.0 liters is swelling. Some mechanics warn people that increased maintenance costs are goint to overwhelm any engineering advantages of turbocharging.

2008 3.00%
2009 3.30%
2010 3.30%
2011 6.80%
2012 8.40%
2013 13.90%
2014 14.80%
2015 15.70%
2016 19.90%
2017 23.40%
2018 30.00%
2019 30.00%
2020 34.70%

Ford Eco Boost is a series of turbocharged engines first introduced in 2010 which include 3 cylinder engines from 1.0 to 1.5 liters. Ford asserts that this technology is less expensive and more versatile than, for example, the hybrid technology first used by Toyota in their Prius for model year 2001 in the US, and expanded to Toyota Highlander in 2006,Toyota Camry in 2007, and some Lexus models.

In 2015, a South African man died after becoming trapped in his Ford Kuga after its 1.6-litre EcoBoost engine burst into flames.

A class action suit in 2020 alleges that a defect in the Ford EcoBoost engine results in engine coolant leaking through the grooves in the cylinder head and pooling as it travels through the engine, as stated in the complaint. As a result of the alleged defect, the complaint asserts that there is not enough coolant in the engine to cool it, which can cause overheating leading to cracked cylinder heads, corrosion, damage to pistols and other internal components, engine seizure, or engine fire.

I'm pretty happy with my ecoboost
Overall those engines seem to be doing well after 100k miles
Keeping my fingers crossed
Bought my ecoboost at about 36k
Now at 90k
The only thing I have done is change the oil and change it early. Usually at 50% of the recommended milage.
I baby my engine with fresh oil

But you have the biggest one. I think it's the little ones they are concerned about.

  1. 1.0 Liters EcoBoost 2012–present DOHC I3
  2. 1.1 Liters Ti-VCT 2017–present DOHC I3
  3. 1.5 Liters EcoBoost 2018–present DOHC I3
  4. 1.5 Liters EcoBoost 2014–present DOHC I4
  5. 1.6 Liters EcoBoost 2010–present DOHC I4
  6. 2.0 Liters EcoBoost 2015–present DOHC I4
  7. 2.3 Liters EcoBoost 2015–present DOHC I4
  8. 2.7 Liters EcoBoost 2015–present DOHC V6
  9. 3.0 Liters EcoBoost 2016–present DOHC V6
  10. 3.5 Liters EcoBoost 2010–present DOHC V6

I have 2 early turbocharged cars: 1982 Volvo 244 Turbo and a 1986 Volvo 740 Turbo.

Volvo and Saab were both early adopters of turbocharging.

They hold up OK so long as you change oil and filter frequently.

I just noticed something that is irksome: Wal-Mart no longer seems to stock the regular "dino" oil that I have always used; instead their oil is either synthetic or a blend of synthetic and dino.

I don't want to have to go synthetic because with an older engine like mine the oil seals are more likely to leak once synthetic is used.

Well those do have pretty small displacement engines 2.1 liters and 2.0 liters.
