I don't think Castanets really carried into the New World as popular instrument. This video describes this woman as a Mexican virtuoso castanet player, but I think it is more high culture, rather than folk culture.


Almost the minute I saw the word, I thought Nareed would not use it. It just sounds very European. I think "charla" is a more common word for "chatter".

Given the alrge numbers of words used by the Wizard taken from very proper Spaniard and Suth American translations, you'd clean up if you bet I don't use every word posted as a SWD. I imagine you'd win more often than you lose :)

Not in this context. "Charla" means "talk" or "chat." When sued as chat, the preferred term here is "plática." when used as a talk, it can also be pkática, but "conferencia" or "exposición" is often used.

I remember some dubbed shows where the characters would use the verb "charlar," which would send me and my firends into fits of giggles.

Yes, they are related but very distantly in Latin. The word "trombone" was borrowed from Italian. The English word "thunder" is also related but before Latin.

I think the word indicates more noise than one man yelling. It has to be a roar of a crowd, a motorcycle, a rock band or fireworks. Something that evokes thunder. I suspect that translation will sound funny to Nareed.
