Easy solution. Cancel all vacation and start over. Union needs to be told these things happen.

How many times can you screw up contracts at your job, and keep it?

It sounds like American is handling it well. They will just keep increasing the pay until they get enough pilots.

I agree
I'm sure they handle it like my company does
All my time off is arranged a year in advance
I already know I am off the final week of 2018. Already scheduled. This way management insures we are properly staffed 24/7
If management notices an understaffing problem, they request volunteers with OT.
If not enough respond, they offer bonuses. That always does the trick.

Pay people more for coming to work when they were supposed to come in the first place?

I don't think I can take the stupidity and snide commentary in this thread the last few days. We're supposed to be able to talk about these things, but the bubble is just too strong. How do you folks even read it?

AA screwed up, not the pilots. Why punish the workers for the company's mistake?

I think they're doing the right thing. Offer more money to the pilots to get those flights staffed.

Because this kind of error happens from time to time. Anyone who takes the job of commercial pilot knows they will have to work the holidays. This would be like Macy's mistakenly offering PTO for Black Friday. Even new workers know something must have been wrong.

Tell them to get to work or they won't have a job later since canceled flights means lost customers.

Absolutely
Its absurd to punish employees for management mistakes
Management makes a mistake. Management needs to pay for the mistake
That's how good companies operate.
This is how good companies attract talent and keep talent

A company that makes employees pay for management mistakes is a company that constantly loses talent and cant retain talent resulting in poor customer service

My company is open 24/7
After profits
Managements biggest objective is to make sure the company retains talent and attracts talent

Believe me, if I was not getting 5 paid weeks off a year, I would be taking my talent elsewhere

You think this isn't the real scenario. The pilots figured out that the software had a glitch. The word spread like wildfire among them that all Xmas holidays were getting approved by the software. They all knew that the airline would have to pay them OT and bonuses to get enough pilots. The pilots are not innocent victims in this screw-up.
