Just watched this gambling movie here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=raGviSrpEFk

The interesting parts are not the stupidity of
the gambling addict, but the abject greed of
the casinos. It's sickening, it's deplorable. And
it's worse today than in the 80's because Vegas
and AC are desperate now.

Just watch it to see Phillip Seymour Hoffman
at his best.

It is a really good movie. I think it shows very clearly that people do not enjoy their addictions - it is a true slavery to sin.

Some of my initial contact with the Wizard was to tell him about this movie when it came out in theatres. Absolutely, a good watch and FR is right -- addictions are not fun. It struck me that the casino had that much greed, and it struck me too how crappy a car Malony drove as well as the trust the bank gave to him to handle those financial transactions.

This and Rounders are my two favorite gambling movies, but for much different reasons. Perfect performance by Philip Seymour Hoffman. I also liked the Canadian feel to it, like when the cops said "Get out of the car, please."

You just knew he was going to sit there and
give all the money back, it's the nature of
the disease. It's like giving a crack addict
access to your stash and telling him not to
take any. Like he could do that even if he
tried. It's a given it will all disappear.

What got me was the different branches
of the casino arguing over this guy
like he was a piece of meat. Trying to find
his weaknesses so they could cater to him
till his money was all gone. Laughing
uproariously when he won a bunch of money
at an opposing casino. Real nice folks, makes
me realize why I despise them so much.

It's never about the money. It's about the action.

It's one of Hoffman's better roles. He never really
speaks about what he's doing at the bank, but you
can see the stress on his face. That kind of acting
is difficult because to have the right look on your
face, you really have to be feeling the emotion.

As far as him having that much leverage, in the
80's you could get away with murder in banking
and securities. That's where we got a lot our present
regulations from, men went jail all over the place
during that period.

Just finished watching it...I wanted to turn it off at certain points, knowing he would lose it all back and cringing at the thought...shivers

You can't embezzle funds from yourself if you're self employed.
So forget it. Is that how Revel treats you, do they send hookers
in mink coats to your room and suites with 3 bathrooms?

It's not a sin to gamble, not in the Bible anyway.
What do you mean.
