From their perspective, they are just receiving light that left here in the year 534. They won't see signs of intelligent life from here in the form of radio transmissions for another 1300+ years.

If neutrinos could travel faster than light, as the last news hype cycle had it, they'd be able to detect out H-bomb tests much sooner.

Hmm. Perhaps I could combine six or seven misreported news stories about scientific breakthroughs or discoveries into one story :)

Much like Bed, Bath, and Beyond. This is one of the beyond. This guy does an analysis on a recent "orb" above the sun and comes up zilch.
(he runs the relevant part of the video within this video).

...in the beyond Mars category

If it is a Dyson Sphere, it may have been abandoned (Star Trek already did that story):

Robot arms unleashed on Mars! (my tabloid heading)

Quote:
NASA's intrepid Curiosity rover on Mars now has the ability to choose an interesting rock target and fire its scientific laser at it autonomously.

A car-sized rover can select a rock it wants to shoot with a laser and then actually fire it all without human intervention.

Speaking of Mars, SpaceX has plans to land a Dragon capsule there.

The idea seems to be merely to land the capsule on Mars, not to send a probe or a rover with it. The intent is to test landing methods on Mars. This has been a problem even for NASA. Mars has an atmosphere, but it's very thin. Parachutes do work, but they provide only so much drag in the thin atmosphere, that often additional means to slow down are required. NASA has used airbags to cushion the landing, and rockets as well. SpaceX's Dragon has rockets built into it.

The Dragon capsules have flown to Earth orbit to resupply the ISS, and have brought back stuff from there as well. Getting to Mars is a very ambitious goal.

Not so good news.

Quote:
Scientists say Europe's experimental Mars probe has hit the right spot but may have been destroyed in a fiery ball of rocket fuel because it was traveling too fast.

Pictures taken by a NASA satellite show a black spot where the Schiaparelli lander was meant to touch down Wednesday, the European Space Agency said. The images end days of speculation over the probe's likely fate following unexpected radio silence less than a minute before the planned landing.

The agency said in a statement that the probe dropped from a height of 2 to 4 kilometers (1.4 miles to 2.4 miles) and struck the surface at a speed exceeding 300 kph (186 mph), "therefore impacting at a considerable speed."
