shotguns are very different with some 86 million owned in the USA, as opposed to 2.6 million owned in Canada.
.

Canada has about 10 times less people than
we do, so 8.6mil compared to 2.6 mil is hardly
on 'par' with each other.

Just curious where you are getting that number from?

3 times the ownership of (editted) shot guns surprises me based on reading that long gun ownership is about on a par.

However, as the long gun registry doesn't require rifles and shot guns to be registered any more (just the owners licenced) and that they reckon 2 million or so guns weren't licenced when the registry was started, it's probably hard to tell what the rate of ownership is.

Be bold and risk defeat, or be cautious and encourage it.

Ha! What I know about guns can be written on the back of box of cartridges.

That's okay. One American soldier in WW TWO would often yell what he thought was "come out with your hands up or I will shoot", when some smiling Germans came out with their hands aloft, one of them told him that he had threatened to defecate but his misuse of their language had put them in a mood for an end to the fighting.

Whatever works!

BTW, I think the below answer here is 24/7

You pretty much repel everyone including the guys that would have to fire the cannons. Whether it actually stops them is another question. It certainly would dampen enthusiasm for people leading the charges.

Compare the United States | Number of Privately Owned Shotguns

In the 2010 census for the United States the population was:
486 Urbanized Areas 219,922,123 (built around a city of at least 50,000 people)
3,087 Urban Clusters 29,331,148 (built around a town of at least 2500 people)
Rural area 59,492,267 population. 97% of the land area

So 88.8 million people in the USA live in rural or urban cluster (small towns), so presumably they live in 30-35 million homes. The number of shotguns is 86 million

The number 2.6 million is also about equal to the number of rural homes in Canada.

I am working under the assumption that only the most zealous gun control activists would want to prohibit a rural homeowner from owning at least one shotgun.

Gun ownership is believed to be concentrated in roughly 1/3 of US homes (down from 1/2 forty years ago). But the answer is based on surveys, and is subject to a great deal of uncertainty.

That much? Guns are fascinating. Start with
the history of Colt, then Winchester. I used
to sell antique hand guns on Ebay till they
banned all gun sales. Now I collect modern
hand guns, the firing kind.
