1% seems like an extremely arbitrary standard. I guess Trump is wrong and Obama's handling of Swine Flu was awesome, yes? I agree nobody should be shaming anyone else for not wearing a mask, UNLESS they are in a business that requests that the masks be worn. That's how free association works. Don't like the masks, don't patronize the business. "War is the remedy that our enemies have chosen..let us give them all they want." William T. Sherman |

Spanish Flu killed far more people when we had far fewer people in the USA. It appears if they had hydroxychloroquine back then they would have had far fewer deaths, same as if we were using it more widely today. Back then the young and healthy died. China virus is mostly taking those already sick. War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength |

These are the sorts of positions I don't understand because they seem to assume that: A. All viruses are equal. B. That humans don't have better immune systems now (in some ways) than quite a few generations ago. AND C. That medical facilities were just as effective then as they are now. B is probably correct. We live in such sanitized conditions now that our immune systems are probably weakening. If you do not get dirty and exposed to germs on a regular basis you are not as "used to it." Similar to how the office worker has a harder time with the cold than the truck driver who is out in it all day. War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength |

That's an interesting thought. I might try to find something on average age at death by primary occupation, of course, it would have to basically ignore deaths directly related to the job for it to be valid in the precise way I'd want. Here is an interesting thing on that. Playing in the NFL means you on average die 10 or so years sooner. And many of those deaths are accidental, nothing to do with how football abuses the body. It is simple stuff really. "That which does not kill us makes us stronger" is a real thing. The common cold is really a series of different bugs attacking you but with the same symptoms when your body fights back. Kind of why you missed school for being sick as you got older. War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength |

| kenarman Member since: Oct 24, 2012 Threads: 14 Posts: 4530 | The "seasonal flu" we have now is an H1N1 flu and is basically the mutated remnants of the Swine Flu epidemic. This is the most likely scenario for where Covid will end up. Studies have shown that between 20% and 50% have some natural immunity and don't get very sick if at all from it. Most of the rest of us will get sick and survive and build up some immunity. Some of us because of other diseases we have, luck or genetically more susceptible will die. In the end there will be no silver bullet vaccine or 100% effective treatment. The world will open up again and Covid will become one more disease out there we might catch and could kill us and life will go on. "but if you make yourselves sheep, the wolves will eat you." I agree The world will open up again Here in the USA, we will continue to be ravaged by the virus. I doubt I will see a crowded concert in person for the rest of my life. Masks and social distancing will be the new norm in the USA. I know I'll wear a mask indoors for the rest of my life. I'll never play live poker for the rest of my life. This is the new normal. The virus is too political in this country. People in other countries such as S Korea and Taiwan have a population united against the virus. The virus is the enemy. Conservatives view rules trying to battle the virus as the enemy. Its been 6 months since I retired due to the virus We are not even close to getting the virus behind us Most people released from a hospital due to the virus are still dealing with the virus and it will probably effect them for the rest of their lives. Unless you only think you’re going to live another year or two, I think you’re being way too pessimistic about a new way of life. And this was not even the worst of the dangerous viruses trying to get a foothold to spread like this one did. The initial containment wasn’t screwed up by the medical or science community, but by know nothing people who probably thought they know science and medicine better than the the experts. That doctor who was pretty much killed in China, knew something serious was up while the real criminals were MINIMIZING the risk. That doctor deserves great honor. I dont think so A normal virus, you beat it and move on with your life People getting out of the hospital 6 months ago are still fighting the virus Its one thing to get sick with a normal virus and completely recover in days or a week. Nobody wants a forever virus which is what this thing is turning into We still dont understand this virus as all the long haulers are pretty much guinea pigs in learning how this virus affects lives long term Sometimes we live no particular way but our own - Grateful Dead "Eyes of the World" |
